Pune: Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM, has assumed the appointment of Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. He took charge of the prestigious position on Tuesday morning.
Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad is an alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College, where he completed his MBBS in 1989. He subsequently pursued an MD in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from the Armed Forces Medical College in 1998.
He is also a WHO Fellow in Neuro-Anesthesiology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.
Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, where he was awarded an M.Phil in Public Administration.
Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad’s 37-Year Career
With an exemplary career spanning over 37 years, Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad has held several prestigious academic, clinical and administrative appointments during his service.
His previous appointments include Additional Director General Medical Services (Navy) at the Naval Headquarters, Commanding Officer of INHS Sanjivani, and Commanding Officer of INHS Asvini.
He assumed the appointment of Director and Commandant of AFMC after serving in these key academic, clinical and administrative positions.
Healthcare Simulation Expertise
Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), USA.
He has also served as an international speaker on healthcare simulation at various national and international conferences, adding to his academic and professional contributions in the healthcare field.

Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad Conferred Vishisht Seva Medal
In recognition of his dedication to patient care and service, Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad was conferred the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2025.
He has also received the Chief of Naval Staff Commendation twice, in 2006 and 2013. In addition, he was awarded the FOC-in-C (South) Commendation in 2007 and the FOC-in-C (West) Commendation in 2011.
