Near-Zero Upstream Methane Emissions Targeted by TotalEnergies

Paris: TotalEnergies is strengthening its cooperation with national oil and gas companies to reduce methane emissions through partnerships with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and Oil India Limited (OIL) in India.

The company highlighted these collaborations on the occasion of a meeting of Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) member companies in Abu Dhabi, focusing on technology, expertise and best-practice sharing to accelerate efforts to reduce methane emissions across the oil and gas sector.

TotalEnergies, PETRONAS to Develop Methane Technology Evaluation Center

TotalEnergies has signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation to contribute to the development of the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC).

Led by PETRONAS, SEA METEC will be a regional center based in Malaysia dedicated to evaluating technologies used for methane emissions measurement and monitoring across Southeast Asia.

TotalEnergies will support the development of SEA METEC by sharing expertise gained over more than 10 years through its TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative (TADI) center.

The TADI center is described by TotalEnergies as Europe’s only facility dedicated to evaluating methane detection and quantification technologies.

    TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative (TADI)
    • This platform is located at the Lacq Research and Development Center in southwestern France.
    • The platform enables gas emissions detection and quantification technologies, particularly those focused on methane, to be tested under controlled conditions.
    • The facility reproduces configurations representative of industrial facilities to assess the performance of different solutions under realistic operating scenarios.
    • Through SEA METEC, the companies aim to strengthen knowledge sharing and support the harmonization of methane emissions measurement and quantification methodologies.
    • The initiative is intended to help companies better detect, measure and ultimately reduce their methane emissions.
TotalEnergies and SONANGOL Strengthen Methane Reduction Cooperation in Angola

TotalEnergies has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SONANGOL to strengthen technical cooperation on methane emissions reduction and decarbonization solutions in Angola.

The agreement builds on experience gained through the AUSEA technology and covers methane emissions detection, measurement, monitoring and reduction, along with the sharing of best practices, methodologies and technical expertise.

TotalEnergies and SONANGOL are working together to identify concrete solutions to reduce methane emissions and flaring, improve energy efficiency, support facility electrification and advance carbon management solutions.

The cooperation also covers greenhouse gas emissions reporting, technical training and knowledge sharing.

The companies will also explore financing opportunities, including potential support from the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Fund.

Oil India and TotalEnergies Expand Methane Detection Campaign in India

In India, TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited are strengthening their collaboration following a successful first campaign using TotalEnergies’ AUSEA technology to detect and quantify methane emissions across more than 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam.

    AUSEA Gas Analyzer
    • AUSEA gas analyzer is mounted on a drone and was developed by TotalEnergies and its R&D partners.
    • The system consists of a dual sensor capable of detecting methane and carbon dioxide emissions while identifying their source.
    • The technology represents a step change in methane emissions detection and measurement compared with traditional techniques.
    • AUSEA allows access to hard-to-reach emission points across different types of industrial facilities, both offshore and onshore.

The companies are now undertaking a second field campaign to expand the use of the technology at additional OIL-operated sites.

The first campaign lasted one month and provided OIL with data to support its emissions reporting. It also demonstrated AUSEA’s ability to detect and quantify methane emissions across diverse sites and field conditions.

The second one-month campaign will extend the use of AUSEA to additional OIL-operated sites, further strengthening cooperation between TotalEnergies and OIL on methane emissions reduction.

TotalEnergies Targets Near-Zero Upstream Methane Emissions by 2030

Commenting on the collaborations, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said, “Our cooperation with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and OIL in India illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to the OGDC and the momentum it has created among international and national companies.

I am convinced that by sharing technologies, expertise and best practices, we can accelerate concrete action and contribute to our common ambition of achieving near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.”

The collaborations with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and OIL bring together technology evaluation, methane detection, measurement and monitoring, as well as reduction and decarbonization expertise.
