TCS and IIT Kanpur Collaborate on Sustainable Cities

Mumbai: TCS and IIT Kanpur have announced a strategic partnership to transform the future of sustainable cities through AI-powered urban planning.

The collaboration, led by IIT Kanpur’s AIRAWAT Research Foundation and supported by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), aims to build urban ecosystems that are resilient, equitable, and ecologically balanced by harnessing artificial intelligence, digital twin technologies, and remote sensing solutions.

TCS and IIT Kanpur’s Vision for AI-Powered Cities

The TCS and IIT Kanpur partnership is designed to tackle India’s growing urbanization challenges. According to the United Nations, 68% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050, with India contributing an additional 416 million urban residents. Such rapid demographic shifts raise concerns about urban mobility, energy consumption, pollution control, and governance.

Through AIRAWAT Research Foundation, IIT Kanpur—established with the support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs—will collaborate with TCS to address these pressing issues. By applying data-driven insights, AI models, and system-based thinking, the initiative seeks to create sustainable urban solutions that balance growth with climate resilience.

Prof Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, emphasized the transformative role of this collaboration:
“India’s cities are at the heart of the nation’s growth story and hold the potential to inspire sustainable urban futures. With AI, data-driven insights, and systems-based approaches, we can reimagine urban spaces as resilient, equitable, and climate-conscious ecosystems.”

Dr Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer at TCS, added: “The future of urban living lies in envisioning cities as dynamic ecosystems. Through this partnership with IIT Kanpur, we will combine AI, remote sensing, multi-modal data fusion, and digital twin technologies to address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s urban needs.”

Prof Sachchidanand Tripathi, Project Director at AIRAWAT Research Foundation, highlighted the global relevance of the initiative: “At AIRAWAT, we are building a model of sustainable urbanization rooted in Indian innovation. This partnership with TCS will harness AI, sensor networks, and digital platforms to improve air quality, predict floods, optimize green spaces, and enhance governance—making cities more livable and resilient.”

    Advanced Technologies for Urban Sustainability

The collaboration will use digital twin models for scenario simulations, enabling planners to test and evaluate interventions before implementation.

AI-driven modeling and satellite data will generate high-resolution air quality maps, while predictive models will help mitigate urban flooding and guide climate action planning. Green spaces will be optimized to reduce carbon footprints and support sustainable city governance.

    Building on a Decade-Long Partnership

This initiative builds on a decade of collaboration between TCS and IIT Kanpur, which has included joint research, educational programs, internships, and the establishment of an ecosystem for Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME). By combining technological innovation with academic expertise, TCS and IIT Kanpur aim to lay the foundation for future-ready cities, positioning India as a global leader in sustainable urbanization.
