  • Green Hydrogen Offtake: Indian Firms Commit 5.5 Lakh MTPA, ₹90,000 Crore Investment Expected

    Green Hydrogen Offtake

New Delhi: India has emerged as a global leader in Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments, with Indian companies signing firm and binding agreements covering more than 5.5 lakh Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of Green Hydrogen equivalent as of October 2026.

Till October 2026, Indian companies have signed the world’s largest Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments, totalling 5,55,610 MTPA.

The commitments position India as a global leader in the Green Hydrogen space and represent approximately 11% of the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s target.

In 2026 alone, Indian companies signed 18 new Green Hydrogen Offtake agreements for the supply of more than 4 lakh MTPA of Green Hydrogen equivalent quantity.

Since the launch of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, a total of 23 Green Hydrogen Offtake contracts covering about 5.5 lakh MTPA of Green Hydrogen equivalent have been signed. More than 70% of these commitments are earmarked for exports.

The Green Hydrogen projects associated with these Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments are expected to attract total investments of around ₹90,000 crore, approximately USD 9.5 billion.

Indian suppliers are offering competitive prices for Green Ammonia and Green Methanol, strengthening India’s position in European and Japanese markets.

These developments are also supporting the expansion of Green Hydrogen Offtake opportunities across international markets.

Green Ammonia is emerging as a clean bunkering fuel for the global and methanol shipping sector. It is also being deployed for ammonia co-firing in thermal power plants to reduce carbon emissions.

Worldwide, Green Hydrogen derivatives are increasingly being adopted in fertilizer production and the refining sector to enable industrial decarbonisation.

The growing adoption is creating additional opportunities for Green Hydrogen Offtake agreements across sectors.

    ₹90,000 Crore Investment Expected

As of October 2026, total firm and signed Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments by Indian companies have reached 5,55,610 MTPA.

This accounts for approximately 11% of the National Green Hydrogen Mission’s target and makes India a Global Leader in the Green Hydrogen space.

Fulfilling these comprehensive domestic and international agreements would require aggregate capital investment exceeding ₹90,000 crore, approximately USD 9.5 billion.

The scale of these commitments highlights the investment requirements associated with India’s expanding Green Hydrogen Offtake pipeline.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) was approved by the Cabinet with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore up to the year 2029-30.

The objective of the Mission by 2030 is to produce at least 5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of Green Hydrogen.

Further, the expected outcomes of the Mission include renewable energy capacity addition of 125 GW, over ₹8 lakh crore in total investments, creation of over 6 lakh full-time jobs and aversion of 50 MMT per annum of CO2 emissions.

The Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments signed by Indian enterprises span major global markets and include strategic partnerships and binding agreements for Green Ammonia and Green Methanol.

    Major Green Hydrogen Offtake Agreements

ACME Group, India, has signed an Green Hydrogen Offtake agreement for the supply of 4,88,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) of Green Ammonia with IHI, Japan.

ACME Group has also signed an agreement for the supply of 1,00,000 MTPA of Green Methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC), Japan, further expanding India’s international Green Hydrogen Offtake commitments.

L&T and ITOCHU have formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the supply of 3,00,000 TPA of Green Ammonia, with deliveries expected to commence from December 2029.

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into a long-term Supply and Purchase Agreement with Samsung C&T Corporation, South Korea, valued at over USD 3 billion, making it one of the largest Green Ammonia Green Hydrogen Offtake contracts globally.

Deliveries under this agreement are expected to begin by 2028.

Agastya is in the process of offtake for the supply of 2,50,000 MTPA of Green Methanol to SAR, Sri Lanka.

AM Green has been selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction run by HINT.CO GmbH, securing a long-term purchase agreement for the supply of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) ammonia to Germany.

Under this agreement, Hintco will purchase ammonia from AM Green for a minimum value of EUR 585 million over a period of 10 years.

The first deliveries to Germany are expected in 2029. The agreement adds to the international Green Hydrogen Offtake pipeline involving Indian companies.

AM Green has also signed a firm Green Hydrogen Offtake agreement with Uniper, Germany, for the supply of 2,50,000 MTPA of Green Ammonia.

AM Green signed a binding head of agreement with Japan’s major power producer JERA for the long-term supply of 70,000 MTPA of Green Ammonia.

Jouno Joules has signed an Green Hydrogen Offtake agreement with Select Energy GmbH for 600 TPD, about 2,19,000 MTPA, of Green Ammonia.

    Domestic Green Hydrogen Demand

Alongside export commitments, substantial domestic demand has also been solidified under targeted government frameworks. The domestic demand base is expected to support India’s Green Hydrogen Offtake ecosystem alongside international markets.

Under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme of the Mission, agreements have been signed for the production and supply of 6,70,000 MTPA of Green Ammonia to 11 fertilizer units spread across the country.

Similarly, under the SIGHT Programme, projects have been awarded for the production and supply of 30,000 MTPA of Green Hydrogen to the refineries of IOCL, BPCL, HPCL and NRL.
