Indian Folk Music Global Reach

New Delhi: The Indian Folk Music Global Reach initiative received a major boost as the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with YouTube in New Delhi to promote and amplify traditional folk and tribal music on a global stage.

The collaboration marks a significant step toward enhancing the Indian Folk Music Global Reach by leveraging digital platforms and structured institutional support.

The MoU exchange was attended by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Secretary Vivek Aggarwal, and YouTube India Managing Director Gunjan Soni.

Government Focus on Cultural Preservation and Expansion

Speaking at the event, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized that preserving and promoting India’s diverse folk traditions remains a core mission of the Ministry of Culture.

He stated, “This collaboration with YouTube represents a significant step forward in nurturing our creative economy and empowering our artists. Our goal is to ensure folk musicians have the tools and platforms needed to achieve greater visibility, sustainability, and recognition both nationally and globally.”

The initiative is expected to accelerate the Indian Folk Music Global Reach by providing artists with enhanced exposure and access to global audiences.

Empowering Artists Through Digital Inclusion

Vivek Aggarwal highlighted the Ministry’s vision of democratizing access for artists across the country. He said, “The Ministry’s focus is on democratizing access so that folk artists from all corners of the country can proudly uphold their culture and traditions, while growing into independent creative entrepreneurs.”

He further added that integrating YouTube’s global reach with the Ministry’s infrastructure would not only provide a stage but also lay the foundation for artists to become self-reliant.

This collaboration is poised to expand the Indian Folk Music Global Reach by bridging the gap between traditional art forms and modern digital ecosystems.

Indian Folk Music Global Reach: Key Objectives of the Initiative

The initiative focuses on empowering India’s traditional and folk musicians through:

  • Access to digital tools and knowledge systems
  • Training in content creation and platform best practices
  • Awareness of intellectual property rights
  • Enhanced collaboration opportunities
  • Sustainable career pathways for artists

By addressing longstanding challenges such as limited global visibility, digital distribution gaps, and lack of rights awareness, the program aims to create a stronger ecosystem supporting the Indian Folk Music Global Reach.

Institutional Support and Execution Framework

The Ministry of Culture will provide strategic leadership and oversee the program’s implementation. A joint task force will guide execution and monitor impact.

Through its autonomous institutions of art and performance, the Ministry will facilitate access to infrastructure, including recording equipment where feasible, and regional networks. It will also co-develop localized educational materials and identify mentors to support artists.

YouTube’s Contribution Under the MoU

As part of the agreement, YouTube will assist in:

  • Training artists in digital content creation best practices
  • Channel management and audience engagement
  • Monetization strategies
  • Copyrights management
  • Leveraging YouTube analytics for audience insights

These efforts are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the Indian Folk Music Global Reach, enabling artists to scale their presence and income streams globally.
