New Delhi: The Indian Railways multitracking projects have received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a total estimated cost of about ₹18,509 crore.

The projects, undertaken by the Ministry of Railways, are expected to be completed by 2030–31.

The approved projects include:

  • Kasara–Manmad 3rd and 4th line
  • Delhi–Ambala 3rd and 4th line
  • Ballari–Hosapete 3rd and 4th line

Together, these initiatives will increase the existing network of Indian Railways by approximately 389 km across 12 districts in Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.

Indian Railways Multitracking Projects: Capacity Expansion and Economic Impact

The increased line capacity is expected to significantly enhance mobility, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen service reliability for Indian Railways. These multi-tracking proposals aim to streamline operations and reduce congestion across key routes.

The projects align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “New India,” supporting regional development and creating employment and self-employment opportunities.

During construction, the projects are expected to generate approximately 265 lakh human-days of direct employment.

Indian Railways Multitracking Projects: Integrated Planning Under PM-Gati Shakti

The projects are planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrated planning, stakeholder consultations, and improved multi-modal connectivity.

The initiative aims to enable seamless movement of people, goods, and services while improving logistics efficiency.

The proposed multi-tracking projects will enhance connectivity for approximately 3,902 villages, benefiting a population of about 97 lakh people.

Indian Railways Multitracking Projects: Tourism Connectivity and Freight Capacity

The projects will improve rail connectivity to major tourist destinations, including:

  • Bhavli Dam
  • Shri Ghatandevi
  • Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
  • Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra/Srinagar
  • Hampi (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
  • Ballari Fort
  • Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary
  • Tungabhadra Dam
  • Kenchanagudda
  • Vijaya Vittala Temple

These routes are also critical for transportation of commodities such as coal, steel, iron ore, cement, limestone, bauxite, containers, foodgrains, sugar, fertilizers, and POL.

The capacity augmentation is expected to enable additional freight traffic of 96 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum).

Indian Railways Multitracking Projects: Environmental and Logistics Benefits

Rail transport, being an energy-efficient and environment-friendly mode of transportation, will help reduce logistics costs and support climate goals. The projects are expected to:

  • Reduce oil imports by 22 crore litres
  • Lower CO₂ emissions by 111 crore kg
  • Deliver environmental benefits equivalent to planting 4 crore trees

The initiative is expected to improve travel convenience, reduce logistics costs, and support sustainable rail operations across the country.
