Thane: KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully treated a 26-year-old patient suffering from chronic varicose veins and a non-healing ulcer using IVUS-Guided Venous Stenting, delivering 90% pain relief and swelling reduction within just 48 hours.
The patient, a resident of Ulhasnagar, had endured nearly five years of severe leg pain, swelling, and a recurrent ulcer due to varicose veins. Previous interventions—including bilateral endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and open surgery—had failed to provide lasting relief.
Further evaluation at KIMS Hospitals revealed the true cause: a non-thrombotic iliac vein lesion (NIVL), previously known as May-Thurner Syndrome.

This condition occurs when the left common iliac vein is compressed between the right iliac artery and the spine, leading to severe venous obstruction. Despite earlier imaging tests, this root cause had gone undetected.
Breakthrough Case of Varicose Veins Treated with IVUS-Guided Venous Stenting
Doctors employed Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), a minimally invasive diagnostic tool that offers detailed real-time images inside the vein. IVUS detected the vein compression with high precision, something not visible in CT or MRI scans.
Following diagnosis, the patient underwent balloon venoplasty with a 14–16 mm balloon, but persistent vein compression required the placement of a self-expanding venous stent.
The procedure was completed in less than an hour, and results were immediate—pain disappeared within 24 hours, swelling reduced drastically within 48 hours, and the patient was able to resume daily activities after years of immobility.

Expert Insights on IVUS-Guided Venous Stenting
“In cases of unexplained recurrent venous disease, especially in younger individuals, we must look beyond the surface,” said Dr Ritesh Gaikwad, Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, KIMS Hospitals, Thane. “IVUS allows us to see what traditional imaging cannot — and that can make the difference between temporary relief and permanent resolution.”
A New Hope for Patients with Chronic Venous Insufficiency
This case demonstrates how IVUS-Guided Venous Stenting is transforming the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency by addressing hidden deep vein pathologies. The availability of IVUS and modern venous stents is redefining vascular care, offering long-term relief to patients who previously struggled with recurring varicose veins and ulcers.
