  • After Two Brain Bleeds, 43-Year-Old Undergoes Successful AVM Brain Surgery at KIMS Thane

    AVM brain surgery

Thane: Doctors at KIMS Hospitals Thane successfully performed a complex AVM brain surgery on a 43-year-old woman who had suffered two life-threatening brain hemorrhages due to a ruptured arterio-venous malformation (AVM).

The high-risk procedure removed the abnormal tangle of blood vessels from her brain and eliminated the risk of future bleeding.

The patient had been living with a right frontal AVM – an abnormal connection of arteries and veins in the brain – that had ruptured twice, with the most recent hemorrhage occurring in July 2025.

Each rupture caused internal bleeding in the brain and significantly increased the risk of severe neurological damage or death. Given the recurrent nature of the condition, AVM brain surgery was considered the most definitive treatment option.

Despite multiple consultations at other centers, surgery had not previously been advised, and alternative approaches did not offer a permanent solution.

When the patient arrived at KIMS Hospitals Thane, detailed imaging studies revealed that the AVM was located superficially in the right frontal lobe, making it surgically accessible.

With a history of repeated ruptures, doctors determined that conservative management would no longer be safe, making AVM brain surgery necessary to prevent further complications.

Following comprehensive evaluation and counselling, the surgical plan was led by Dr. Ujwal Yeole, Consultant Neurosurgeon at KIMS Hospitals Thane. The team decided to proceed with microsurgical excision of the malformation.

AVM Brain Surgery: Meticulous Planning and Precision

The AVM brain surgery required meticulous planning and precision. Under microscopic guidance, surgeons carefully identified the abnormal blood vessels.

Feeding arteries supplying the malformation were systematically controlled and divided. The nidus – the core of the AVM – was delicately separated from surrounding brain tissue.

Finally, the draining veins were secured before the complete removal of the malformation, ensuring safe and effective excision.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Ujwal Yeole with intra-operative support from senior neurosurgeon Dr. Deepu Banerjee.

The anesthesia team led by Dr. Sangeetha, the ICU team under Dr. Amit, and the operation theatre staff headed by Ms. Swapnali ensured seamless perioperative care during the complex AVM brain surgery.

Following the procedure, the patient’s recovery was smooth. She did not experience any new neurological deficits or complications and was discharged in stable condition.

With the AVM successfully removed, she is now free from the risk of another brain hemorrhage.

Dr. Ujwal Yeole said: “An arterio-venous malformation is like a ticking time bomb in the brain. Once it ruptures, the risk of re-bleeding remains significant, and each bleed can be devastating. In this case, surgery offered the most definitive and curative option. These procedures demand precision, coordination, and experience. The true success lies not just in removing the AVM, but in restoring the patient’s sense of safety and future.”

This successful AVM brain surgery highlights the importance of timely medical intervention and specialized neurosurgical expertise in treating complex cerebrovascular conditions.
