Low Level Light Weight Radar: MoD Signs ₹770 Cr BEL Contract for Indian Army

Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar (LLLR-I)

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army at a cost of approximately ₹770 crore.

The contract for the LLLR-I was signed in New Delhi on October 21, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar (LLLR-I) system is capable of detecting and tracking fighter-size targets as well as mini and micro drones.

The Low Level Light Weight Radar also has an additional capability to prioritise aerial targets.

The capabilities of the LLLR-I system will enable the Indian Army to successfully counter the threat posed by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

The procurement of the Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar aligns with the Government’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The acquisition is a significant step towards the indigenisation of air defence platforms and is expected to boost India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The LLLR-I procurement will also support Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) while contributing to the development of a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.

The contract with BEL for the Low Level Light Weight Radar marks a further step towards strengthening indigenous capabilities in air defence platforms and supporting India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
