New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening climate-resilient agriculture and improving farm productivity, ICAR–Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR), Hyderabad, has developed and demonstrated an innovative smart seed coating technology designed to enhance seed quality, crop establishment, and resilience against biotic and abiotic stresses across a wide range of agricultural crops.
The biopolymer-based smart seed coating technology, which has received an Indian Patent, comes at a time when agriculture is facing growing challenges from climate change, erratic rainfall, drought, temperature extremes, soil degradation, emerging pests and diseases, and declining resource-use efficiency.
As seed remains the primary carrier of agricultural technology and the foundation of crop productivity, improving seed performance has become increasingly important for sustainable agricultural growth.
Even under optimal crop management conditions, poor seed establishment can significantly limit yield realization. Strengthening seed performance during the early stages of crop growth offers one of the most cost-effective and scalable approaches to improving agricultural productivity.
The newly developed smart seed coating technology aims to address these challenges by improving germination, seedling vigour, and crop resilience from the earliest stages of plant development.
Biopolymer-Based Seed Enhancement Platform
The smart seed coating technology developed by ICAR-IIOR utilizes biodegradable biopolymeric materials to create a multifunctional protective layer around seeds.
The coating serves as an efficient carrier system for beneficial microorganisms, nutrients, micronutrients, crop protection agents, and plant growth-promoting compounds.
By delivering these inputs directly at the seed-soil interface, the technology creates a protective microenvironment that promotes rapid germination, vigorous seedling growth, enhanced root development, and improved tolerance to environmental stresses during the critical crop establishment phase.
According to ICAR-IIOR, this integrated seed enhancement platform supports healthier crop growth by ensuring that essential biological and nutritional inputs are available precisely where they are needed during the earliest stages of development.
Field Demonstrations Show Significant Yield Gains
Field demonstrations of the smart seed coating technology conducted under farmer field conditions have recorded substantial improvements in crop establishment, plant vigour, and productivity.
In groundnut and soybean crops, demonstrations carried out in Telangana reported yield improvements of nearly 30 percent compared with conventional farmer practices.
These results highlight the technology’s potential to improve both productivity and profitability for farmers.
The benefits of similar seed enhancement approaches have also been demonstrated across multiple crops and agro-climatic regions.
Multi-location AICRP-Seed trials involving soybean, maize, groundnut, chickpea, cotton, mustard, and pigeon pea showed consistent improvements in seedling vigour, crop establishment, and yield.
The trials recorded productivity gains ranging from 12 percent to 37 percent over untreated controls, demonstrating the scalability of biopolymer-based multilayer seed treatments and reinforcing the value of smart seed coating technology across diverse cropping systems.
Strengthening Rainfed Agriculture
The smart seed coating technology holds particular significance for rainfed agriculture, which accounts for a major share of India’s cultivated area and remains highly vulnerable to climatic uncertainties.
Challenges such as delayed monsoons, intermittent droughts, moisture stress, poor soil conditions, and pest and disease pressures frequently impact seedling emergence and crop establishment, ultimately reducing farm productivity.
By improving seed performance and protecting emerging seedlings during the most vulnerable stages of growth, the technology can significantly enhance crop resilience while reducing production risks.
The innovation supports better establishment even under adverse environmental conditions, making it highly relevant for farmers operating in rainfed regions.
Versatile Application Across Crops
Unlike conventional seed treatments that typically address a single requirement, the ICAR-IIOR smart seed coating technology functions as a comprehensive seed enhancement platform capable of integrating multiple beneficial inputs into a single application.
The technology can be customized for a broad range of crops, including cereals, millets, pulses, oilseeds, fibre crops, fodder crops, vegetables, spices, and horticultural crops.
Its adaptability across crop categories makes it a versatile solution capable of supporting diverse farming systems throughout the country.
Supporting National Agricultural Priorities
The smart seed coating technology aligns closely with national priorities focused on sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, improved seed systems, and enhanced resource-use efficiency.
According to ICAR-IIOR, wider adoption of advanced seed enhancement technologies can contribute significantly to increasing agricultural productivity, reducing input losses, improving nutrient-use efficiency and biological-use efficiency, and strengthening India’s food, nutritional, and economic security.
Scientists at the institute emphasized that future agricultural growth will increasingly depend on technologies that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of every input used by farmers.
“Smart Seeds represent an important step in this direction by delivering protection, nutrition, and biological support precisely where they are needed, at the earliest stage of crop growth.”
They further noted that such technologies can help farmers achieve better crop establishment, improved stress tolerance, higher yields, and greater profitability while minimizing environmental impacts.
Promoting Large-Scale Adoption Through Partnerships
To maximize the impact of the smart seed coating technology, ICAR-IIOR is actively promoting partnerships with public and private seed systems for large-scale dissemination and adoption.
The institute highlighted the important role that State Seed Development Corporations, National Seed Corporation, cooperative seed federations, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), seed processing units, seed hubs, custom seed treatment centres, seed entrepreneurs, and private seed companies can play in integrating smart seed technologies into existing seed production and distribution networks.
Such collaborations are expected to facilitate the large-scale availability of quality-enhanced seeds and accelerate the adoption of advanced seed enhancement technologies among farmers.
Advancing Next-Generation Smart Seeds
ICAR-IIOR continues to advance research on next-generation seed enhancement technologies involving biopolymers, beneficial microbes, nutrient delivery systems, and environmentally sustainable formulations.
These innovations are aimed at transforming conventional seeds into climate-resilient Smart Seeds capable of withstanding increasing environmental challenges.
The institute believes that widespread adoption of smart seed coating technology can strengthen India’s seed systems, improve agricultural productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, and contribute to improved livelihoods for millions of farmers across the country.
