Chennai: Vultr and AMD are expanding their AI infrastructure collaboration in India with a new 20 MW supercluster in Chennai powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs.
The deployment will create the country’s largest AMD Instinct deployment and give Vultr two of the world’s largest AMD AI infrastructure deployments globally, alongside its flagship supercluster in Springfield, Ohio.
Vultr, the world’s largest privately-held cloud infrastructure company, announced the expansion as part of its efforts to strengthen AMD-powered infrastructure for enterprise and sovereign cloud initiatives.
The new Chennai supercluster will expand access to large-scale AI compute for organizations in India.
Each AMD Instinct MI355X GPU offers 288GB of HBM3E memory and 8TB/s of memory bandwidth, providing the performance and memory capacity required to develop and deploy increasingly complex AI models at scale.
The deployment is designed to support organizations seeking high-performance AI infrastructure within India.
The Chennai supercluster will serve AI labs and foundation model builders, AI-native startups, enterprises, as well as research and academic institutions.
Vultr said the infrastructure will support demanding AI workloads, including large language model and foundation model training, fine-tuning and high-throughput inference.
The new deployment is intended to provide organizations with the compute capacity required to develop and deploy AI applications at scale while addressing requirements related to local infrastructure.
“Enterprises deploying AI at scale need infrastructure they can access locally to meet data sovereignty, data residency, and latency requirements,” said J.J. Kardwell, CEO of Vultr.
“Chennai supercluster, powered by AMD MI355X GPUs, gives organizations in India the capacity to train, fine-tune, and run inference on in-country infrastructure.”
Vultr and AMD Expand Instinct GPU Collaboration
The collaboration between Vultr and AMD spans the AMD Instinct GPU roadmap, including MI300X, MI325X and MI355X, as well as the planned MI455X and AMD Helios rack-scale architecture.
The relationship also includes AMD EPYC data center CPUs, which power Vultr VX1 Cloud Compute.
The Chennai deployment further extends the Vultr and AMD collaboration as the companies expand access to advanced AI infrastructure through Vultr’s global cloud footprint.
Vultr also plans significant additional capacity expansion in 2027, including AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs and the AMD Helios rack-scale AI architecture.
The planned expansion is expected to broaden access to next-generation AI infrastructure across Vultr’s global footprint.
The Chennai supercluster represents another step in the company’s deployment of AMD-powered AI compute capacity.
Chennai Supercluster to Use AMD ROCm Open Software Ecosystem
The Chennai supercluster will also leverage the AMD ROCm open software ecosystem. The platform will give developers access to widely used AI frameworks, libraries and models, offering greater flexibility and choice in developing and deploying AI workloads.
The open software approach will also support AI innovation in India through open-source software and community-driven development.
By combining AMD Instinct compute with the ROCm ecosystem, the Vultr infrastructure will support developers, researchers, startups and enterprises working on AI workloads.
“India has the talent and ideas to build the next generation of AI. Access to compute at this scale will help turn more of those ideas into reality,” said Jaya Jagadish, Country Head & SVP Engineering, AMD India.
“Through our collaboration with Vultr, we’re expanding access to AMD Instinct compute in India, backed by the AMD ROCm open software ecosystem, giving researchers, startups and enterprises greater choice and flexibility in how they develop and deploy AI.”
Expanding Sovereign Cloud Infrastructure in India
The new deployment comes amid rising global demand for sovereign cloud infrastructure. Security concerns, regulatory requirements and performance expectations are intensifying the need for in-country infrastructure capable of supporting advanced AI workloads.
Vultr currently provides secure, compliant infrastructure through 34 global cloud data center regions to enterprises, AI innovators and government agencies in 17 countries across six continents.
The Chennai supercluster expands Vultr’s AI infrastructure presence in India while bringing large-scale compute closer to organizations developing and deploying AI applications.
The Chennai deployment also reflects the broader expansion of geographically distributed AI infrastructure, with large-scale compute being positioned closer to where data is created and AI applications are deployed.
With the new 20 MW Chennai supercluster, Vultr is expanding its AMD-powered infrastructure in India while strengthening access to AMD Instinct compute for AI labs, startups, enterprises and research institutions.
