New Delhi: Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav interacted with start-ups and innovation companies working on Delhi-NCR air pollution mitigation, focusing on practical, affordable, scalable and technology-driven solutions to address the region’s air-quality challenge.
The interaction was held as part of a series of stakeholder engagement initiatives under the theme ‘Saaf Hawa mein Hissedaari, Hum Sabhi ki hai Zimmedaari’ campaign.
The interaction focused on translating innovative technologies into real-world, practically deployable and affordable solutions that can deliver measurable impact at source and in real time for Delhi-NCR air pollution management.
During the interaction, Bhupender Yadav presented specific problem statements covering nine key areas of air pollution management. He engaged with innovators on how their technologies could be adapted, scaled and deployed on the ground.
The Minister highlighted that the engagement would complement ongoing measures such as the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), promotion of cleaner fuels and electric mobility, and strengthening of air-quality monitoring through source-level technological interventions.
Technology Solutions for Delhi-NCR Air Pollution
The proposed solutions covered the entire air-pollution management chain, including detection, monitoring, prediction, enforcement and mitigation.
Among the technologies discussed were tamper-proof systems for Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (OCEMS), Air Pollution Control Devices (APCD) and Pollution Under Control (PUC) testing.
The start-ups also presented AI-enabled systems for identifying industrial emission violations, real-time monitoring of combustion efficiency and diesel generator emission-control devices, and technologies to detect and control dust at construction and demolition sites.
Innovative approaches for low-cost mechanised road sweeping, monitoring road-dust resuspension, portable pothole repair and modular dust-containment systems were also discussed as part of efforts to address Delhi-NCR air pollution at different sources.
Addressing the meeting, Bhupender Yadav described the interaction with start-ups as a novel and proactive initiative aimed at bridging the gap between policymakers and technology innovators.
He said such engagement can help bring greater uniformity in policy implementation and enhance transparency in governance.
Stressing the need for stronger technology-enabled enforcement, he said integration of OCEMS data with plant-operation data is essential to identify malpractices, while artificial intelligence can play an important role in achieving this objective.
Delhi-NCR Air Pollution: AI, Sensors and Drones to Strengthen Air Pollution Monitoring
The Union Minister emphasised the importance of city-wide air-quality monitoring and called for cleaner vehicles and smoother traffic management. He also highlighted the need for tamper-proof PUC monitoring and AI-based prediction of traffic congestion hotspots.
For Delhi-NCR air pollution, the Minister said start-ups need to focus on environment-friendly solutions for the scientific management of crop residue, solid waste and construction and demolition waste.
He also stressed the need for guidelines on parali storage involving MoAFW, CAQM and CPCB, along with the development of an in-situ crop-residue storage model.
Faster and more efficient road maintenance was also highlighted as an important measure for active road-dust control.
Briefing the media, Bhupender Yadav said the major focus of the interaction was on using artificial intelligence, sensors, remote sensing, satellite and drone-based technologies and data analytics to move towards real-time understanding of air pollution.
The solutions presented by innovators included hyperlocal air-quality monitoring, city-wide pollution mapping, hotspot identification and forecasting, AI-based source apportionment, real-time identification of pollution sources and predictive traffic-congestion management.
Technologies were also displayed for 24×7 detection of stubble and open biomass burning, along with automated identification of vehicles without valid PUC certificates and over-aged vehicles.
According to the Minister, these technologies could further strengthen timely enforcement and intervention related to Delhi-NCR air pollution.
Delhi-NCR Air Pollution: Start-ups Showcase Waste and Crop-Residue Solutions
The interaction also covered technology-based solutions addressing the waste and residue dimensions of air pollution.
These included systems designed to connect recycled construction and demolition waste products with demand from the construction sector, municipal solid waste management solutions, and integrated systems for the collection, transportation and productive utilisation of paddy straw.
The paddy straw solutions covered applications including bioenergy, biomass fuel, composting and other value-added uses such as environment-friendly packaging. Such applications can help reduce the need for open-field burning.
Start-ups working on crop-residue-based materials and biochar-based solutions also showcased opportunities to convert agricultural residue into productive uses instead of treating it as waste, forming another component of the broader approach to Delhi-NCR air pollution.
Focus on Integrated and Scalable Solutions
Bhupender Yadav further informed that participating innovators showcased capabilities spanning artificial intelligence and machine learning, IoT-based environmental monitoring and pollution analytics, drone-based aerial mapping, remote sensing, advanced sensing systems and source-level pollution-control technologies.
The Minister noted that the interaction underscored the need to move beyond isolated technological solutions towards integrated, scalable and economically viable interventions that can be deployed across Delhi-NCR.
He encouraged innovators to align their technologies with clearly identified field-level requirements and explore how successful solutions can be taken to scale through appropriate implementation and monitoring mechanisms.
The engagement marks an effort to bring together government, technology innovators and field-level implementation in a Jan Bhagidari mode to develop actionable solutions for the Delhi-NCR air pollution challenge.
