Mumbai: Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies, and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), one of the country’s premier institutions for science, engineering and technology research, have signed a master research agreement (MRA) to establish a long-term strategic partnership focused on scaling up and commercializing lab-scale innovations in next-generation energy technologies and advanced clean energy solutions.
The master research agreement was signed at the IIT Bombay campus by Dr. Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Tata Power, and Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, Dean (Research & Development), IIT Bombay, in the presence of Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay.
The partnership under the master research agreement brings together IIT Bombay’s research capabilities and Tata Power’s industry expertise to jointly develop solutions across several areas of advanced energy and power technology.
These areas include smart grids, power electronics, energy storage, electric mobility, cybersecurity, AI for power systems, digital grid technologies, carbon capture and circular economy.
Through the master research agreement, Tata Power and IIT Bombay aim to accelerate the translation of cutting-edge research into scalable, industry-ready technologies.
The collaboration is intended to support India’s clean energy transition, energy security and sustainable development.

The master research agreement provides a framework for the two institutions to combine their respective strengths in research, innovation and large-scale technology deployment.

The master research agreement reflects the broader emphasis of the Government of India on strengthening industry-academia partnerships to accelerate research, innovation and commercialization of technologies critical to the country’s energy transition.
The collaboration between Tata Power and IIT Bombay is focused on advancing technologies across clean energy, power systems and emerging energy applications, with the objective of moving innovations from laboratory research towards scalable and deployable solutions.
The master research agreement marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership between Tata Power and IIT Bombay aimed at supporting the development and commercialization of next-generation energy technologies and advanced clean energy solutions.
