Chennai: In a significant move to strengthen emergency medical response in India, The ePlane Company and Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce electric air ambulances and medical delivery drones into the country’s healthcare ecosystem.
The partnership aims to improve access to trauma care by connecting emergency patients across densely populated urban regions and remote locations with specialized medical facilities within the critical “golden hour.”
According to the announcement, India loses over 170,000 lives annually in road accidents, with one person dying every 3.5 minutes.
Despite the availability of medical expertise, only one in five patients reaches trauma care within the crucial first hour after an accident.
The collaboration seeks to address delays caused by traffic congestion, long travel distances, and the high operational costs associated with conventional helicopter transfers by deploying electric air ambulances for rapid medical transport.
Bridging the Golden Hour Gap
For trauma, cardiac, and stroke patients, the first hour after an emergency is often the deciding factor between survival and death.
However, patients frequently lose valuable time navigating congested roads, travelling long distances, or being stabilized at nearby facilities before being transferred to specialized trauma centres.
The collaboration between The ePlane Company and Apollo Hospitals is designed to establish a faster and more direct pathway from the point of emergency to definitive treatment through an integrated network of electric air ambulances, medical drones, and road ambulances.
Integrated Emergency Response Network
The proposed emergency healthcare ecosystem combines air and road transport to improve patient access and medical logistics.
Electric Air Ambulances
The ePlane Company’s e200X aircraft is designed for rapid inter-hospital transfers, trauma response, cardiac emergencies, stroke care, and organ transportation.
According to the company, the aircraft can transport patients up to seven times faster than road transport while operating at a fraction of the cost of traditional helicopter transfers.
The deployment of electric air ambulances is expected to reduce critical response times significantly.
Medical Delivery Drones
Through its subsidiary Amber Wings, The ePlane Company will deploy unmanned aerial vehicles designed to transport blood products, organs, vaccines, medicines, diagnostic samples, and other medical supplies between healthcare facilities. These drones are intended to reduce delivery times from hours to minutes.
Apollo Hospitals Network
The partnership will leverage Apollo Hospitals’ extensive healthcare infrastructure, including 1,066 ambulances, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and diagnostic centres across India.
Together, these capabilities aim to establish a connected emergency response network capable of delivering life-saving care in some of India’s most congested cities as well as difficult-to-access regions.
The expanded use of electric air ambulances is expected to strengthen emergency medical connectivity across diverse geographies.
Future Plans
As part of the collaboration, Apollo Hospitals has indicated its intent to examine the possibility of placing orders for e200X electric air ambulances and Amber Wings’ medical delivery drones.
The Memorandum of Understanding also outlines the possibility of a future strategic investment by Apollo Hospitals in The ePlane Company, subject to mutually agreed terms.
Both organizations also intend to work with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other relevant authorities to facilitate regulatory approvals and develop the infrastructure required to support operations involving electric air ambulances and medical drones.
