Hindalco Pune Facility Delivers 10000 EV Battery Packs to Mahindra SUVs

Hindalco Chakan Facility

Pune: In a major boost to India’s electric mobility ambitions, Hindalco Industries Ltd., the flagship aluminium company of the Aditya Birla Group, has announced the delivery of 10000 advanced aluminium battery enclosures to Mahindra & Mahindra for its cutting-edge electric SUVs – BE 6 and XUV 9e. These components were manufactured at Hindalco’s newly inaugurated EV component facility in Chakan, Pune, India’s premier automotive manufacturing hub.

Built with an investment of ₹500 crore and spread over 5 acres, the new facility represents Hindalco’s strategic leap into EV component manufacturing. The plant currently has an annual production capacity of 80,000 battery enclosures, with plans to ramp up to 160,000 units. As of now, over 3,000 Mahindra electric vehicles equipped with these lightweight aluminium enclosures are already on the roads.

The battery enclosures, co-developed with Mahindra, feature up to 40% weight reduction compared to steel variants, improving vehicle range by 8–10%. These high-strength aluminium components also offer enhanced crash safety and superior thermal management—critical for efficient EV performance.

“Hindalco’s Chakan facility marks a significant shift in India’s EV ecosystem from import dependence to localized, high-performance aluminium solutions,” said Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries. “Our partnership with Mahindra reinforces our commitment to sustainable, innovative, and future-ready mobility solutions.”

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO (Auto and Farm Sector) at Mahindra & Mahindra, noted, “Hindalco’s deep materials expertise and engineering capabilities have been instrumental in creating efficient battery solutions that will power the next phase of India’s EV journey.”

Notably, the plant features an inclusive workforce with almost 100% of machine operators being women – an exceptional achievement in the Indian manufacturing sector. The project is also expected to create around 1,000 jobs and directly supports the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.

As India’s EV supply chain continues to mature, Hindalco aims to extend these capabilities to other Indian and global OEMs, offering a broader portfolio of lightweight aluminium solutions including crash-relevant and structural parts for both EVs and ICE vehicles.

Hindalco Sustainability-First

The Chakan facility’s use of low-carbon aluminium further underscores the company‘s sustainability-first approach, ensuring that innovation and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
