India’s automobile industry began the calendar year on a strong note, according to SIAM Motor Vehicle Data January 2026, released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
The industry reported robust year-on-year growth across production, domestic sales, and exports, with January marking the highest-ever sales for Passenger Vehicles, Two-Wheelers, and Three-Wheelers for the month.
Total vehicle production in January 2026 reached 29,27,394 units, reflecting 15.0% YoY growth. Domestic sales stood at 23,80,722 units, up 23.0% YoY, while exports rose to 5,71,066 units, registering 23.5% YoY growth.

The SIAM Motor Vehicle Data January 2026 shows strong growth momentum across most vehicle categories, with Utility Vehicles and scooters emerging as the key drivers.
Passenger Vehicles (PV)
- Passenger vehicle domestic sales reached 4,49,616 units, growing 12.6% YoY.
- Excluding Tata Motors, domestic PV sales stood at 3,79,394 units, reflecting 8.0% growth.
- Sub-segments (Domestic Sales):
- Passenger Cars: 1,20,636 units (−5.1%)
- Utility Vehicles: 2,46,844 units (+15.9%)
- Vans: 11,914 units (+5.9%)
- Utility Vehicles continued to drive growth in the passenger vehicle category.
Three-Wheelers
- Domestic three-wheeler sales rose to 75,725 units, registering 30.2% YoY growth.
- Sub-segments (Domestic Sales):
- Passenger Carrier: 60,881 (+30.4%)
- Goods Carrier: 13,374 (+33.4%)
- E-Rickshaw: 925 (−7.9%)
- E-Cart: 545 (+18.5%)
- The segment witnessed a strong rebound in both passenger and goods carriers.
Two-Wheelers
- Domestic two-wheeler sales reached 19,25,603 units, growing 26.2% YoY.
- Scooters recorded the fastest growth within the category.
- Sub-segments (Domestic Sales):
- Scooters: 7,50,580 (+36.9%)
- Motorcycles: 11,26,416 (+20.3%)
- Mopeds: 48,607 (+16.1%)
Quadricycle
- Production stood at 954 units, reflecting 104% growth, while domestic sales remained negligible.

Industry performance during April–January FY2025–26 remained positive across production, domestic sales, and exports.
SIAM Motor Vehicle Data January 2026: Grand Total (All Segments)
- Production: 2,74,86,739 units (+9.8%)
- Domestic Sales: 2,22,50,380 units (+7.6%)
- Exports: 53,95,710 units (+24.4%)
Exports grew significantly faster than domestic sales during the period.
- Passenger Vehicles (Cumulative)
- Domestic Sales: 37,06,551 (+6.2%)
- Exports: 7,47,752 (+17.6%)
- Utility Vehicles continued to dominate with:
- +8.4% domestic growth
- +25.2% export growth
- Passenger cars grew 1.8%, while vans grew 3.9%.
- Three-Wheelers (Cumulative)
- Domestic Sales: 6,85,385 (+10.4%)
- Exports: 3,83,615 (+52.2%)
- Exports led the recovery in this segment.
- Two-Wheelers (Cumulative)
- Domestic Sales: 1,78,58,440 (+7.8%)
- Exports: 42,59,393 (+23.7%)
- Scooters
- Domestic: +15.2%
- Exports: +14.0%
- Motorcycles
- Domestic: +4.1%
- Exports: +25.0%

- Flat domestic performance

Passenger Vehicle sales reached 4.50 lakh units, growing 12.6%, while Three-Wheelers grew 30.2% to 0.76 lakh units and Two-Wheelers rose 26.2% to 19.26 lakh units. The year has begun on a positive note, supported by sustained demand following the GST rate reduction. Initiatives announced in the Union Budget 2026 to strengthen India’s manufacturing base are expected to support medium-term sector growth.”
