Puttaparthy: Bharat Forge has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine facility at Visakhapatnam.

The Marine Gas Turbine complex will focus on repair, overhaul, and indigenous development capabilities, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s naval self-reliance and defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The agreement was signed by Guru Biswal during the Aerospace and Defence Investment Conclave held in Puttaparthy. The signing took place in the presence of Rajnath Singh and N. Chandrababu Naidu. The event also witnessed the foundation stone laying ceremony for India’s AMCA fifth-generation stealth fighter programme.

The upcoming Marine Gas Turbine facility will be developed over nearly 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor.

Bharat Forge stated that the facility will be strategically co-located with the Naval Dockyard, INS Eksila, and the Eastern Naval Command Headquarters at Visakhapatnam.

The company said this would be the first time that such a critical propulsion sustainment capability would be brought into India’s private sector.

Phase 1 of the Marine Gas Turbine project will establish a comprehensive repair and overhaul complex, including hot section restoration of blades, vanes, and combustion liners, component manufacturing capabilities, a non-destructive evaluation laboratory, and a 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

Phase 2 of the Marine Gas Turbine initiative will include India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine Development and Assembly Hall, along with a full-spectrum hot test cell scalable across propulsion ratings.

Bharat Forge also announced plans to develop and qualify an indigenous Marine Gas Turbine on Indian soil for the first time within the private sector ecosystem.

The facility is also expected to serve as a regional repair and overhaul hub for friendly nation navies while generating nearly 750 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Speaking at the event, Rajnath Singh said, “These projects will cater to all three Services and strengthen our efforts to make India self-reliant in defence manufacturing. Andhra Pradesh is set to emerge as a major hub of aerospace and defence production.”

N. Chandrababu Naidu stated, “New Andhra Pradesh is being built on the pillars of innovation, infrastructure and industrialisation. As India moves towards Viksit Bharat, Andhra Pradesh will lead from the front.”

Amit Kalyani said, “India’s warships have long carried the might of this nation on engines built abroad. That dependence ends here, at Visakhapatnam.

Bharat Forge’s Aerospace division is committing to bringing Marine Gas Turbine repair, overhaul, and indigenous development onto Indian soil — for the first time in the private sector, co-located with the very Naval Command that depends on these engines. This is not just an investment. This is our pledge to the Indian Navy, and to the nation.”

Gas turbines currently form the propulsion backbone of the Indian Navy’s frontline surface combatants. Bharat Forge highlighted that disruptions in overseas supply chains in recent years have directly impacted repair and overhaul cycles as well as operational readiness.

The company described the Marine Gas Turbine facility as a strategic national initiative aligned with the vision of Sushakt Bharat-Surakshit Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
