Thane: KIMS Hospitals, Thane, has successfully treated a rare ovarian tumour in a 24-year-old woman while preserving her future fertility, underlining the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary expertise, and patient-centric care in managing complex gynaecological cancers.
The young, unmarried patient approached the hospital with sudden abdominal pain and rapid abdominal swelling that had progressed over a week.
Until a few days prior, she had reported no significant symptoms except a history of heavy and painful menstrual cycles for the past two to three years.
Upon medical evaluation, doctors identified a large abdominal mass comparable in size to a pregnancy of nearly seven months, raising suspicion of a rare ovarian tumour.

Further investigations, including ultrasound and MRI scans, revealed a sizeable tumour originating from the right ovary.
Blood tests showed elevated tumour markers, strengthening concerns of a rare ovarian tumour – specifically ovarian dysgerminoma, a germ cell tumour that typically affects young women.
Given the patient’s age and her desire to retain fertility, the medical team at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, opted for a fertility-preserving surgical approach.
After comprehensive counselling, doctors performed a meticulously planned procedure to remove only the affected ovary and fallopian tube, while preserving the uterus and the healthy ovary.
The rare ovarian tumour was removed intact without rupture, significantly lowering the risk of cancer dissemination.
The patient experienced a smooth postoperative recovery and was discharged within five days.

The precision of the surgery eliminated the need for chemotherapy, sparing the patient from potential side effects commonly associated with cancer treatment. Postoperative tumour marker levels returned to normal, and the patient remains in good health under close medical follow-up.
