Air India has placed an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX Jets, reinforcing its single-aisle fleet strategy as it scales domestic and regional operations in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
The latest order expands Air India’s total Boeing aircraft commitment to nearly 200 airplanes across single-aisle and widebody categories.
The purchase includes 20 Boeing 737-8 aircraft and 10 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, both secured through the exercise of existing options.
Boeing and Air India confirmed that the 737-8 order was finalised this month, while the 737-10 order had previously appeared as an unidentified customer order on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.

Boeing 737 MAX Jets Central to Air India’s Long-Term Fleet Strategy
The additional Boeing 737 MAX Jets form part of Air India’s broader fleet modernisation and growth plan, aimed at enhancing capacity, efficiency, and operational commonality across its narrow-body network.
The airline plans to deploy the 737-8 aircraft on high-frequency domestic and short-haul regional routes, leveraging their fuel efficiency, dispatch reliability, and range flexibility.
The larger 737-10 variant is expected to support higher passenger volumes while offering the lowest cost per seat among single-aisle aircraft, allowing Air India to optimise network performance while maintaining fleet commonality.
Commenting on the announcement, Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, said the additional order aligns with the airline’s long-term vision of becoming a world-class global carrier.
He noted that the aircraft acquisitions build on the airline’s 2023 orders and subsequent additions, supporting steady fleet deliveries and upgrades planned over the coming years.

Boeing also highlighted the strong performance of Air India’s existing 737-8 fleet.
Paul Righi, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia at Boeing, said the order underscores Air India’s confidence in the Boeing 737 MAX Jets to deliver capacity, versatility, and efficiency as the airline expands connectivity across India and South Asia.
According to Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook, the Indian and South Asian aviation market will require nearly 3,300 new airplanes over the next two decades, with approximately 90% expected to be single-aisle aircraft such as the 737 MAX.
