Fleet Upgrade Pushes Air India to Suspend Delhi-Washington DC Flights from September 1

Air India Delhi-Washington DC flights

Gurugram: Air India will suspend its Delhi-Washington DC flights effective September 1, 2025, as part of efforts to maintain the reliability of its global network during a period of significant fleet upgrades and operational constraints.

The suspension follows the airline’s recent launch of an extensive retrofit programme for 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and onboard services.

The project, which began in July, will temporarily reduce aircraft availability until the end of 2026. Compounding the challenge is the continued closure of Pakistani airspace, which forces longer flight routes and increases operational complexity for Air India’s long-haul services.

Air India Delhi-Washington DC Flights: Passengers to Get Rebooking or Full Refund

Passengers booked on flights beyond September 1 will be contacted directly and offered rebooking on alternative routes or full refunds.

Travelers will still be able to access Washington, D.C. via convenient one-stop connections through Air India’s U.S. gateway cities—New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Chicago, and San Francisco—via partner airlines including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. These partnerships ensure seamless itineraries with through-checked baggage.

Air India remains committed to its North American network, continuing direct services between India and six destinations in the region, including Toronto and Vancouver.

The airline, which returned to Tata Sons’ ownership in 2022, is undergoing a five-year transformation programme, Vihaan.AI. This includes a record order of 570 new aircraft, network expansions, and significant upgrades to its existing fleet, including full interior refurbishments.
