New Delhi: The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology in Punjab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) to undertake a research study on developing a Predictive and Analytical Framework for Monthly Consumption Expenditures in India.
The MoU was signed during a ceremony attended by Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI. Prof. Padmakumar Nair, Vice Chancellor, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, and R. Rajesh, Additional Director General, Capacity Development Division, MoSPI, signed the agreement.
Dr. Chandramani Sharma, Additional Director General, Coordination and Quality Control Division (CQCD), MoSPI, and Dr. Sourav Chakrabortty, Deputy Director General, Research and Analysis Division (RAD), MoSPI, were also present at the signing ceremony.
The collaboration between MoSPI and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology will focus on leveraging Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) data for estimating Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) at the national and state levels.

As part of the research study, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and MoSPI will analyse household consumption patterns and generate evidence for poverty estimation and broader economic planning.
The initiative will involve the use of HCES data to develop a framework for understanding and estimating monthly consumption expenditures across India.
The study is aimed at supporting analysis at both national and state levels.
The collaboration also marks an initiative focused on the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Official Statistics.
Through the MoU, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology and MoSPI will work together on research involving predictive and analytical approaches to consumption expenditure data.
The partnership highlights the growing collaboration between MoSPI and academic institutions in research and the application of new technologies to Official Statistics.
The research study will examine household consumption patterns while using HCES data to estimate MPCE. The findings are also intended to generate evidence that can contribute to poverty estimation and broader economic planning.
With the agreement, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology joins MoSPI in an academic and research collaboration centred on consumption expenditure analysis, predictive frameworks and the innovative use of AI in Official Statistics.
