New Delhi: Redcliffe Labs and Skyroot Aerospace have joined hands to explore the future of diagnostics in space through DRIFT-1, bringing together India’s diagnostics and private space capabilities in a collaboration focused on studying how diagnostic reagents perform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
The collaboration marks an initiative connecting India’s healthcare and private space ecosystems. Through DRIFT-1, Redcliffe Labs’ dry diagnostic reagents will be placed in Low Earth Orbit for 90 days alongside an identical ground control.
The comparison is intended to help establish how the space environment affects the stability and performance of the reagents while generating a flight-heritage dataset for the technology.
DRIFT-1 to Test Diagnostic Reagents in Low Earth Orbit
The first step of the collaboration, DRIFT-1, will test Redcliffe Labs’ dry diagnostic reagents in Low Earth Orbit for 90 days. An identical set will be maintained on the ground as a control for comparison.
The data generated through DRIFT-1 will help assess the impact of the space environment on reagent stability and performance.
The initiative is also expected to generate data that could help inform the development of more resilient diagnostic solutions for challenging environments on Earth.
The collaboration combines Redcliffe Labs’ expertise in diagnostics with Skyroot Aerospace’s capabilities in space technology.
The companies aim to study how diagnostic technologies perform under the extreme conditions of Low Earth Orbit and explore how the findings could contribute to diagnostics on Earth.
Collaboration Explores Future Space Diagnostics
Beyond DRIFT-1, the collaboration has potential applications across space-enabled diagnostics, astronaut health, life sciences and microgravity research.
The initiative could also contribute to the development of future point-of-care diagnostic solutions for human spaceflight, including potential applications for Gaganyaan and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
For Redcliffe Labs, the opportunity is focused on converting the data generated through DRIFT-1 into knowledge that can inform more resilient diagnostic technologies for challenging environments on Earth.
Such applications could include settings where conventional healthcare infrastructure or cold-chain availability is limited.

Through DRIFT-1, Redcliffe Labs will study the performance of its dry diagnostic reagents in orbit while comparing them against an identical ground control.
