New Delhi: The Geological Survey of India has signed an Umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to strengthen collaboration in geoscience, mineral exploration and disaster management through next-generation technologies.
The MoU was signed at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi, in the presence of S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, MeitY. The agreement was signed by E. Magesh, Director General, C-DAC, and Pradeep Singh, Additional Director General, Geological Survey of India (GSI).
Under the collaboration, the Geological Survey of India and C-DAC will combine High-Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities with geological expertise to address complex sub-surface exploration challenges using advanced digital technologies.
The partnership aims to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) for processing large geophysical datasets.
This will enable high-resolution 3D subsurface mapping, predictive modelling for mineral targeting and cognitive processing of decades of unstructured geological records into a domain-specific Large Language Model (LLM).
The Geological Survey of India will also collaborate with C-DAC to strengthen disaster mitigation initiatives.
The partnership includes slope-scale landslide monitoring using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), development of early warning systems and studies on Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) to improve disaster preparedness and response.
In addition, the Geological Survey of India and C-DAC aim to accelerate the discovery of critical minerals and Rare Earth Elements (REE).

The initiative is expected to contribute to India’s economic security, strengthen supply chain resilience and support technological self-reliance through the adoption of advanced digital technologies.
The collaboration underscores the shared commitment of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and the Geological Survey of India to harness Artificial Intelligence, High-Performance Computing and emerging digital technologies for Earth science applications, geoscience research, mineral exploration and disaster management.
