New Delhi: Auto Industry Performance May 2026 reflected strong momentum across the Indian automotive sector, with Passenger Vehicles, Three-Wheelers, and Two-Wheelers registering their highest-ever sales for the month of May 2026.

According to the latest monthly performance data, total production of Passenger Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers, and Quadricycles reached 29,27,711 units during May 2026, while domestic sales posted significant double-digit growth across major categories.

The Auto Industry Performance May 2026 report showed that Passenger Vehicle domestic sales stood at 4,38,854 units, while Three-Wheeler sales reached 70,720 units and Two-Wheeler sales totaled 19,02,209 units during the month.

However, production and sales data for BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata Motors, and Volvo Auto were not available for production figures, while BMW, Mercedes, JLR, and Volvo Auto domestic sales data were unavailable.

Tata Motors’ domestic sales have been included only in the total Passenger Vehicle figures in the report.

Commenting on the Auto Industry Performance May 2026, Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said: “Passenger Vehicles, Three-Wheelers and Two-Wheelers recorded highest ever sales of May in 2026, with high double-digit growth in each segment. Passenger Vehicles recorded sales of 4.39 lakh units, posting a growth of 27.3% over May 2025.

Further, 0.71 lakh units of Three-Wheelers were sold, with a growth of 31.1% and 19.02 lakhs units of Two-Wheelers were sold with a growth of 14.8% in May 2026, compared to May of last year. Lower base effect of previous May and demand created due to reduced GST rates, with easier financing, is again getting reflected in higher off-take this month.”

The Auto Industry Performance May 2026 highlighted a substantial rise in Passenger Vehicle sales compared to the same month last year. Domestic Passenger Vehicle sales increased from 3,44,656 units in May 2025 to 4,38,854 units in May 2026, representing a 27.3% growth.

Three-Wheeler sales also posted impressive gains across all sub-segments. Passenger Carrier sales climbed from 44,354 units to 57,649 units, reflecting a 30.0% increase, while Goods Carrier sales rose from 8,720 units to 11,802 units, registering 35.3% growth.

E-Rickshaw sales increased from 720 units to 1,000 units, a growth of 38.9%, and E-Cart sales jumped from 148 units to 269 units, recording the highest segmental growth of 81.8%. Overall Three-Wheeler sales increased from 53,942 units in May 2025 to 70,720 units in May 2026, marking 31.1% growth.

The Auto Industry Performance May 2026 also reflected healthy expansion in the Two-Wheeler market.
  • Scooter sales registered the strongest growth among major categories, rising from 5,80,696 units to 7,39,667 units, an increase of 27.4%.
  • Motorcycle sales improved from 10,39,156 units to 11,13,973 units, posting 7.2% growth, while Moped sales increased from 37,264 units to 48,569 units, representing 30.3% growth.
  • Combined Two-Wheeler sales reached 19,02,209 units, compared to 16,57,116 units in May 2025, registering an overall 14.8% increase.

The report also noted that Quadricycle sales remained negligible during the reporting period.

For Passenger Vehicles, detailed segment-wise breakup excluding Tata Motors showed total sales of 3,03,099 units in May 2025 and 3,79,764 units in May 2026, as detailed breakup data for Tata Motors was unavailable.

The Auto Industry Performance May 2026 underscores broad-based growth across India’s automotive industry, supported by a lower base effect from the previous year and increased demand driven by reduced GST rates and easier financing conditions, contributing to higher consumer off-take during the month.
