Sustained Rise in Cargo Handling

The sustained rise in cargo handling has been supported by multiple factors, including capacity augmentation and modernization of port infrastructure, strengthened multimodal connectivity and hinterland linkages, and the adoption of digital and smart port initiatives.

Additionally, increased handling of key commodities such as coal, crude oil, containers, fertilizers, and POL has further boosted cargo throughput across major ports.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to implement a comprehensive maritime strategy centered on port-led development, logistics integration, and sustainability.

The strong performance in FY 2025–26 reflects growing trade confidence and the effectiveness of policy measures aimed at improving efficiency and maximizing capacity utilization.

With continued infrastructure investments and policy momentum, India’s Major Ports are well-positioned to achieve new milestones in cargo handling and play a pivotal role in strengthening the country’s economic growth and global trade leadership.
