Sanjeev Sanyal Advocates Risk-Taking and Creative Destruction

Sanjeev Sanyal

In a thought-provoking conversation on Bharatvaarta, Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, laid out his perspective on some of the most critical economic and strategic challenges and opportunities facing India today. Drawing from historical experience, institutional understanding, and a long-term civilizational lens, Sanyal touched upon trade, reforms, risk-taking, population dynamics, and India’s future aspirations.

“We need to stop thinking in binaries. India’s trajectory is not about choosing between chaos and control, but about managing complex systems with the maturity of a civilizational state,” he said.

Highlights from the Discussion:

Sanjeev Sanyal On India-US Free Trade Agreement:

Sanjeev Sanyal acknowledged the strategic potential of a free trade agreement with the US, pointing out that while India is not yet in a position to fully liberalize everything, eliminating unnecessary tariffs and participating in a US-oriented supply chain could be mutually beneficial.

On Gradual vs. Rapid Reforms:

Sanjeev Sanyal emphasized India’s preference for gradualism over a blitzkrieg approach to reform. “We are not like the US where a ‘Doge-like’ administration overturns everything overnight,” he noted, adding that incremental, systemic reforms allow India to navigate its deep legal and institutional frameworks more effectively.

On Resilient Growth:
Sanjeev Sanyal highlighted that India’s 6.5%+ growth rate, even amid global instability, is not to be dismissed. “In an uncertain global economy, it is not wise to always chase the highest possible growth rate. We need stability, not volatility driven by short-term over-expansion,” he said.

On Creative Destruction and Risk:
He strongly argued in favour of creative destruction, where entrepreneurial failure is normalized. “We need to move away from a culture that stigmatizes failure. Risk-taking is not just good; it’s essential for innovation and long-term economic vibrancy,” Sanyal said.

On Population and Demography:
Challenging the narrative of strict population control in some Indian states, Sanjeev Sanyal warned of the risks of demographic collapse. “We must be very careful. India is not immune to the Japan-like aging crisis. Fertility rates in southern states are already below replacement level,” he cautioned.

On Learning from History:
He reiterated the need to take lessons from India’s past seriously. Referencing figures like Chanakya and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sanyal said that understanding historical turning points is vital for contemporary decision-making. “History is not just about the past—it’s a strategic asset for shaping the future,” he said.

On India’s Civilizational Identity:
India, he argued, is not just a modern nation-state but a civilizational entity. “There’s no single way to govern or define India. It’s a composite, decentralized model—a patchwork of cultures, languages, and traditions. Recognizing this is key to effective governance,” he emphasized.

On India@2047:
Looking ahead to India’s centenary of independence, Sanyal expressed optimism. He envisioned a developed, confident Bharat reclaiming its historical stature. “By 2047, we should not just aim to be rich; we must be respected globally—not only for our economy, but also for our cultural and intellectual leadership,” he said.
