Thane: KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully treated a challenging case of a large uterine fibroid in a woman in her 50s, drawing attention to the widespread issue of uterine fibroid in Indian women.
The condition affects nearly one in three women over the age of 35, yet remains underdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and delayed medical intervention.
The patient had lived with symptoms for four years, including progressive abdominal swelling, urinary difficulty, and painful leg swelling. While prioritizing her family’s needs, she overlooked her own health.

Upon medical evaluation, doctors discovered a fibroid nearly the size of a seven-month pregnancy, which had overtaken her uterus and ovaries. The mass was pressing on surrounding organs and blood vessels, leading to complications such as bladder obstruction, anemia, and risk of kidney damage.
“This was not just a medical case but a story of how women, especially in India, often ignore their own health needs while caring for others,” said Dr Sujata Rathod, Consultant Gynecologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, who led the surgical team.
The team performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, demonstrating that even large fibroids can be treated through minimally invasive surgery.
“It was possible to remove this large mass through keyhole surgery, ensuring minimal discomfort and faster recovery,” Dr. Rathod explained.

Uterine Fibroid in Indian Women: A Growing Concern
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that affect 30–35% of Indian women in their reproductive years. Despite their prevalence, awareness is low, and many women dismiss symptoms like heavy bleeding, bloating, or pelvic discomfort as “normal.” Delayed treatment often transforms a manageable condition into a complex surgery.
Warning signs of fibroids that should not be ignored include:
- Unexplained abdominal fullness or bloating
- Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Persistent pelvic discomfort or pain
- Swelling in the legs or urinary difficulties
Advantages of Laparoscopic Surgery for Fibroids
Dr. Rathod emphasized the benefits of laparoscopic surgery for uterine fibroids in Indian women:
- Smaller incisions with minimal scarring
- Reduced postoperative pain
- Faster recovery and quicker return to daily activities
- Lower risk of infection and blood loss
- Shorter hospital stay (usually 1–3 days)
The patient was discharged on the third day post-surgery and has since resumed her work as a beautician.
“This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and how advanced laparoscopic techniques can offer women safer, less invasive, and faster recovery options even in complex cases,” Dr. Rathod added.
KIMS Hospitals, through this case, reinforced its call for women to prioritize their health and seek timely medical attention for uterine fibroid in Indian women.
