DRDO-HEMRL Delivers Indigenously Developed Signal Star Naval Flare to Indian Navy

Signal Star Naval Flare

Pune: The Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) has successfully indigenized and developed the Signal Star Naval Flare for use on Kalvari-class submarines of the Indian Navy.

The system was officially handed over to the Director General, Naval Armament Inspection (DG-NAI), at a ceremony held in Pune, marking a significant achievement under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence pyrotechnics.

Signal Star Naval Flare Designed for Submarine Operations

The Signal Star Naval Flare is a specialized underwater signaling device tailored to the demanding operational requirements of submarines.

Ejected through the submarine’s signal ejector, it travels upward through the water and activates upon reaching the surface. Once ignited, the flare produces a bright, star-like illumination, visible across long distances, including during night operations or in adverse weather conditions.

Key Features of the Signal Star Naval Flare

  • Pressure-resistant casing for reliable underwater operation.
  • Hydrostatic mechanisms to activate the flare upon surfacing.
  • Brilliant pyrotechnic compositions in red and green variants.

Standardized naval communication codes:

  • Red Signal Flare – Indicates distress, emergency, or urgent tactical messages.
  • Green Signal Flare – Used for identification, recognition, or safe-operational signaling during fleet maneuvers.
  • High luminosity and sustained burn duration for visibility to both ships and aircraft.

Applications Across Naval Operations

The Signal Star Naval Flare enhances submarine communication and safety:

  • Communication & Identification: Provides a visual code for interaction with friendly ships and aircraft.
  • Distress & Emergency: Red signals act as an emergency locator during rescue operations.
  • Exercises & Training: Used in naval drills for tactical coordination.
  • Tactical Maneuvers: Assists in coded communication during underwater warfare operations.

Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence Pyrotechnics

By indigenously developing the Signal Star Naval Flare, India has reduced dependence on foreign suppliers for critical submarine signaling equipment.

The achievement demonstrates mastery in advanced pyrotechnic formulations, robust design engineering, and long shelf-life reliability for harsh marine environments.

This innovation enhances India’s underwater warfare capabilities, boosts the operational readiness of the Indian Navy, and stands as a shining symbol of Atmanirbhar Bharat in advanced naval defence technology.
