  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production in Focus as Honeywell and NTPC Green Sign MoU

    sustainable aviation fuel

New Delhi: In a strategic move to bolster India’s clean energy transition, Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTPC Green to jointly explore the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The partnership aims to leverage Honeywell’s proprietary eFining technology to convert captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from NTPC’s power plants, in combination with green hydrogen, into SAF.

The collaboration underscores India’s growing commitment to sustainable aviation fuel as a means of decarbonizing the aviation sector – one of the most challenging industries to transition to low-carbon alternatives.

Sustainable aviation fuel is widely recognized as a critical solution to reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions in aviation by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

“Sustainable aviation fuel production forms a vital component of NTPC Green’s ambitious Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh. With regulatory mandates on SAF blending expected to catalyze early adoption, we see significant potential for green hydrogen projects in the aviation sector,” said DMR Panda, Executive Director (Green Hydrogen), NTPC Ltd.

Honeywell brings its global SAF technology expertise to this collaboration, while NTPC Green contributes its leadership in renewable energy and hydrogen development.

The partnership supports India’s twin objectives – achieving carbon reduction targets and enhancing energy security – while also positioning the country as a regional hub for SAF innovation and exports.

“We are excited to collaborate with NTPC Green to propel India’s sustainable aviation ambitions,” said Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager, Energy and Sustainability Solutions, Honeywell India. “This partnership will enable the efficient conversion of emissions into cleaner fuels, accelerate green hydrogen adoption, and help the aviation industry meet its long-term environmental commitments.”

Roadmap for Scalable Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production in India

The joint study, expected to be completed by mid-2025, will provide a detailed roadmap for scalable SAF production in India and evaluate export potential to international markets. The initiative aligns with India’s broader goals of building a green economy while addressing global climate challenges.
