New Delhi: India is fast-tracking its artificial intelligence (AI) self-reliance efforts, with 12 companies currently developing foundation models (Indian Large Language Model) powered by 38,000 GPUs available at an affordable rate of ₹65 per hour.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced that the first Indian Large Language Model is expected to launch by the end of 2025.

The development of the Indian Large Language Model is a key milestone under the IndiaAI Mission, aimed at democratizing AI access, ensuring affordability, and reducing dependence on foreign technologies.

Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY and CEO of IndiaAI, stated, “The Government’s IndiaAI Mission is bridging key gaps by enabling affordable compute infrastructure, creating a national data platform, supporting foundation models, advancing AI skilling, and promoting safe and trustworthy AI.”

He added that the upcoming Indian Large Language Model will serve as a cornerstone of the country’s AI ecosystem, promoting innovation and accessibility across sectors.

AI Impact Summit 2026: Indian Large Language Model at the Core of India’s AI Mission

Indian large language model launch announcement came during MeitY’s pre-summit events at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 in New Delhi. These sessions set the tone for the upcoming India-AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February 19–20, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

Inaugurating the event, S Krishnan, Secretary, MeitY, highlighted India’s frugal and inclusive approach to digital transformation. “We have built a model that ensures accessibility for all while remaining resource-efficient. Several international agencies have shown interest in replicating this model across the Global South,” he said.

Leaders Discuss AI for Inclusive, Safe, and Sustainable Growth

The pre-summit brought together leaders from government, industry, academia, and global institutions to explore how AI can power inclusive, safe, and sustainable growth in digital and telecom ecosystems.

Four expert panels discussed key themes of India’s AI roadmap:

AI in Telecom: Trust, Innovation, and Inclusion

Kavita Bhatia, COO of IndiaAI Mission, emphasized the growing role of AI in telecom—from predictive maintenance and fraud detection to spectrum management and customer engagement. She noted that trustworthy AI would be vital for reliable connectivity, especially in rural regions.

Global Participation and Recognition

The event featured participation from top organizations including Reliance Jio, TCS, AWS, AMD, Google, Microsoft, Airtel, BharatGPT-Corover.ai, C-DOT, UNESCO, and BITS Pilani. MeitY’s Pavilion at IMC 2025 won the “Best Exhibitor – Government” award for showcasing India’s AI milestones and the upcoming India–AI Impact Summit 2026.
