India Achieves INR 1.51 Lakh Crore in Defence Production, Private Sector’s Share 23 Per Cent

defence production

New Delhi: India’s defence production has achieved an all-time high of ₹1,50,590 crore in FY 2024-25, reflecting robust growth under the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The figure marks an 18% increase over FY 2023-24’s ₹1.27 lakh crore and a 90% surge compared to FY 2019-20.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh hailed the achievement as a testament to India’s strengthening defence industrial base, attributing the milestone to the coordinated efforts of the Department of Defence Production, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), public sector manufacturers, and private industry players.

Defence Production: Public and Private Sector Growth

DPSUs and other PSUs accounted for 77% of total output, while the private sector’s share rose from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, underscoring its growing contribution to the nation’s defence ecosystem. Production by DPSUs grew 16%, while private sector output rose 28% year-on-year.

Boost from Policy Reforms

The upward momentum is attributed to policy reforms, improved ease of doing business, and a decade-long focus on indigenisation. These measures have reduced reliance on imports while building a self-sustaining defence manufacturing ecosystem with strong export potential.

Record Defence Exports

Defence exports also hit a historic high of ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25, up 12.04% from ₹21,083 crore the previous year. This aligns with the Government’s vision of transforming India into a major defence exporter.

With continued policy support, rising private participation, and expanding export markets, experts believe India’s defence production sector is on track for sustained acceleration in the coming years.
