New Delhi: The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has recognised three major ports – Deendayal Port Authority (Gujarat), V O Chidambaranar Port Authority (Tamil Nadu), and Paradip Port Authority (Odisha) – as Green Hydrogen Hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM).
The initiative aims to establish these ports as key centres for the production, storage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, reinforcing India’s position as a global leader in clean energy.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission envisions creating a self-reliant hydrogen economy by promoting large-scale hydrogen hubs across the country.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal hailed the announcement as a landmark moment for India’s maritime and energy sectors.
“This recognition marks a defining moment in India’s maritime journey as we transition towards becoming a modern, sustainable, and globally competitive maritime power,” Sonowal stated.
He further emphasized that India’s ports, as Green Hydrogen Hubs, would serve as catalysts for clean energy innovation and drive sustainable logistics along the eastern and western trade routes.
Recognising the complexities of long-distance hydrogen transport, the Mission adopts a cluster-based development model to improve early-stage viability, infrastructure integration, and cost efficiency.
This model ensures that hydrogen hubs develop in strategically advantageous regions capable of supporting large-scale industrial activity.
The revised scheme guidelines, issued on 27 June 2025, outline the establishment of Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters (HVIC) and Green Hydrogen Hubs.
Under Component B2 of these guidelines, MNRE may recognise potential hub locations without direct financial assistance, allowing them to access incentives available through other government schemes.

Green Hydrogen Hubs: Focal Points for India’s Hydrogen Economy
With this recognition, Deendayal, V.O. Chidambaranar, and Paradip Ports will now serve as focal points for India’s hydrogen economy. Projects developed in these zones will be eligible for benefits under multiple central and state-level initiatives aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The move is expected to stimulate industrial participation, attract green capital, and foster technological innovation in clean fuel solutions, furthering India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
This recognition was approved by the competent authority and aligns with India’s broader vision of sustainable growth and energy self-reliance.
