Pune: Wellington College International Pune (WCI Pune) brought Pune’s first-ever musical production of Disney’s The Jungle Book Kids to life, captivating audiences with a unique Indian interpretation of the beloved classic.
The production – held on the school’s campus – featured a talented ensemble of Junior and Senior School students, who transported the audience into the heart of the Indian jungle through dazzling performances, imaginative costumes, and vibrant storytelling.
“Though the production had its challenges, it was an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Olav Hekala, Head of Music at WCI Pune. “Adapting a story originally penned by an Anglo-Indian author and making it culturally relevant and respectful was a major undertaking. But the entire team went above and beyond to make this a joyful and inclusive production.”
A Cultural Reimagining Rooted in India
While staying true to the original storyline, WCI Pune’s adaptation celebrated India’s heritage through:
- Gond tribal art and traditional brocade fabrics
- Indian-inspired silhouettes and costume design
- Energetic choreography and cultural music elements
- Iconic characters like Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, Shere Khan, and King Louie, reimagined for the Indian context
The show combined educational elements with entertainment, delivering a strong message of identity, unity, and environmental harmony – core values that reflect WCI Pune’s global ethos and local connection.
