New Delhi: PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed 12 years since its launch on August 28, 2014, with the financial inclusion scheme recording 59.09 crore accounts and total deposits of ₹3.17 lakh crore as of August 19, 2026.
The PM Jan Dhan Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi as one of his first programmes after assuming office and has emerged as a major initiative for expanding access to formal banking services across India.
According to the Ministry of Finance, 55.7% of PM Jan Dhan Yojana account holders are women, while 77.8% of the accounts are held in rural and semi-urban areas.
The scheme has also facilitated the issuance of 41.29 crore RuPay cards to account holders, expanding access to digital payments and financial security.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana Expands Financial Inclusion
The PM Jan Dhan Yojana is aimed at ensuring that every unbanked adult has access to a basic bank account without any minimum balance requirement or maintenance charges.
Under the scheme, each account comes with a free RuPay debit card that provides accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh. The facility is intended to encourage digital transactions while providing financial security to account holders.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana account holders are also eligible for an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000, providing financial support during emergencies.
The accounts opened under the PM Jan Dhan Yojana have also played an important role in extending life and accident insurance coverage to millions of workers in the unorganised sector through the Jan Suraksha schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
Pankaj Chaudhary Highlights PMJDY’s Transformation
On the occasion of the 12th anniversary, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary highlighted the wider impact of the PM Jan Dhan Yojana on India’s banking and financial landscape.
“On 28th August 2014, Prime Minister inaugurated the National Mission on Financial Inclusion, popularly known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). Today, I am happy that Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is celebrating its 12th anniversary.
We should not see PMJDY just in the light of the opening of more than 59 crore accounts, garnering a deposit balance of ₹3.17 lakh crore, or the issuance of 41.29 crore free-of-cost RuPay cards, but in its transformation of the banking and financial landscape of the country, where the delivery of financial services to the last person in society—the poorest of the poor—has been made possible without delay or the involvement of middlemen.”
Under PM Jan Dhan Yojana, 78% of accounts have been opened in rural or semi-urban areas, while approximately 56% of accounts are owned by women. The figures reflect the scheme’s focus on bringing people living in far-flung areas into the formal financial sector.
The PM Jan Dhan Yojana has enabled millions of people, particularly those from marginalised sections, to access banking and financial services. Account ownership has also enabled access to insurance and pension coverage.
Through saturation drives across states and districts, the government has moved towards near-universal coverage of bank accounts while widening the reach of insurance and pension schemes.
On the 12th anniversary of the PM Jan Dhan Yojana, Chaudhary appreciated the efforts of bankers and business correspondents deployed across the country for taking the scheme to the common man and contributing to its implementation.
JAM Trinity Strengthens Direct Welfare Transfers
The Jan-Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile, or JAM, trinity has emerged as a key mechanism for direct delivery of financial assistance, with PM Jan Dhan Yojana forming its core.
Through the JAM trinity, the government has transferred welfare benefits directly into the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The mechanism has enabled direct delivery of welfare assistance while eliminating intermediaries and reducing delays.
The integration of PM Jan Dhan Yojana with Aadhaar and mobile connectivity has strengthened the delivery of financial assistance and helped expand the reach of formal financial services.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana Accounts Reach 59.09 Crore
As of August 19, 2026, the total number of PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts stood at 59.09 crore.
Of the total account holders, 55.7%, or 32.92 crore, are women. Meanwhile, 77.8%, or 45.95 crore, of the accounts are located in rural and semi-urban areas.
The figures underline the extensive reach of the PM Jan Dhan Yojana across rural and semi-urban regions and among women account holders.
PMJDY Deposits Rise to ₹3.17 Lakh Crore
Total deposits in PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts stood at ₹3,16,514 crore as of August 19, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Finance, deposits under PMJDY have increased approximately 12.8 times over the last 12 years, while the number of accounts has increased 2.3 times between August 2015 and August 2026.
The rise in deposits reflects the growing use of PM Jan Dhan Yojana accounts and the increased participation of account holders in formal savings.
Average PMJDY Account Deposit Reaches ₹5,356
The average deposit per PM Jan Dhan Yojana account stood at ₹5,356 as of August 19, 2026.
The average deposit has increased 3.4 times over the last 12 years, from August 2015 to August 2026.
The Ministry of Finance said the increase in average deposits is another indication of the increased usage of accounts and the inculcation of saving habits among account holders.
41.29 Crore RuPay Cards Issued Under PMJDY
As of August 19, 2026, a total of 41.29 crore RuPay cards had been issued to PM Jan Dhan Yojana account holders.
The number and usage of RuPay cards have increased over time, expanding access to digital payments for beneficiaries of the scheme.
The free RuPay debit card facility is an important component of PM Jan Dhan Yojana, providing account holders with access to digital transactions along with accident insurance coverage.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana Supports Savings and Credit Access
The success of PM Jan Dhan Yojana has been attributed to its mission-mode approach, regulatory backing, public-private partnerships and integration with digital public infrastructure such as Aadhaar for biometric verification.
The PM Jan Dhan Yojana continues to serve as a first step towards financial inclusion, with further progress focused on enabling savings and access to credit for people who were previously excluded from formal financial services.
With visible saving patterns, PMJDY account holders are now eligible for loans, including MUDRA loans. This provides opportunities for individuals to increase their incomes and build financial resilience.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana Enters 13th Year
As the PM Jan Dhan Yojana enters its 13th year, the scheme continues to focus on inclusive growth, digital innovation and economic empowerment.
Since its launch in 2014, PM Jan Dhan Yojana has expanded access to formal banking services, particularly among women and people in rural and semi-urban areas.
The scheme’s 12-year milestone comes with 59.09 crore accounts, ₹3.17 lakh crore in deposits and 41.29 crore RuPay cards issued as of August 19, 2026.
The continued expansion of PM Jan Dhan Yojana reflects India’s efforts to ensure wider access to financial services and bring citizens into the formal financial system.
