LoI Signed to Establish Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation in India

Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation

New Delhi: A Letter of Intent (LoI) has been signed to establish the Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation, a dedicated initiative aimed at advancing the translation of CRISPR-based scientific research from laboratories to real-world clinical applications.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru – an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) – and CRISPRBITS Private Limited (CrisprBits), a Delhi-based biotechnology company focused on developing affordable diagnostics using CRISPR gene-editing technology, have formalised plans to jointly set up the Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation (CoE-CIT).

The collaboration represents a landmark public–private partnership between academia and industry and is among the first such initiatives of its kind in India.

Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation to Bridge Bench-to-Bedside Gap

The Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation is envisioned as a platform to bridge the bench-to-bedside gap by combining JNCASR’s strengths in fundamental biomedical sciences with CrisprBits’ expertise in applied gene-editing and translational platforms.

The initiative aims to enable therapeutic impact by facilitating the movement of scientific discoveries into scalable clinical and healthcare solutions.

By aligning academic research capabilities with industry-driven innovation, the Centre of Excellence for CRISPR Innovation and Translation is expected to demonstrate how Indian scientific research can be effectively translated into societal and clinical benefits.

The CoE-CIT is also positioned as a replicable national model for fostering academic–industry collaboration and strengthening India’s biotechnology and innovation ecosystem.

Commenting on the development, Umesh Waghmare, President of JNCASR, said that planning the Centre of Excellence on the JNCASR campus in partnership with CRISPRBITS marks an important milestone.

He noted that the collaboration will synergise strengths in genetics, molecular and chemical biology, and computational biology, opening new pathways for societal impact and alignment with national missions.
