The 63-kilometer stretch is estimated to cost ₹5,100 crore for constructing two additional tracks. The project will commence after receiving cabinet approvals from both the state and central governments, which could take up to six months.

Pune-Lonavala Railway: Need for Capacity Expansion

The Pune-Mumbai railway corridor currently operates beyond its capacity. With 79 mail/express trains and 41 local services running daily, the line has been under heavy pressure. The initial approval for expansion was given in 1997-98, but the project was delayed due to multiple hurdles. Now, the approval marks a major revival.

Benefits of the New Tracks

With the completion of the Pune-Lonavala Railway Project, the section will have four lines in total. Express and goods trains will run on the new lines, while local trains will continue on the existing ones. The segregation of services will reduce delays, increase capacity, and save passengers’ time.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, who consistently pursued the project, said the expansion was essential to address the growing number of passengers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were also approached for approvals.

Execution and Land Requirement

According to MRVC’s Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi, MRVC will implement the project once necessary approvals are received. A total of 68.91 hectares of land will be required for execution.
