The IIT Madras M Tech Programmes have officially opened applications for the 2026–27 academic year, as the Indian Institute of Technology Madras invites candidates to apply for its postgraduate offerings including M.Tech., M.Sc., and M.A. programmes.
Ranked among India’s top educational institutions, IIT Madras continues to expand its academic footprint through the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes, providing opportunities for advanced learning in cutting-edge domains across engineering, sciences, and humanities.
The IIT Madras M Tech Programmes span a wide range of disciplines such as Aerospace Engineering, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Electric Vehicles, Robotics, Semiconductor Materials Technology, and Ocean Engineering, among others.
These programmes are designed to equip students with domain expertise aligned with emerging industry demands.
Alongside the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes, the institute also offers M.A. programmes in English Studies, Development Studies, Economics, and Public Policy, as well as M.Sc. programmes in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
The application process for the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes is currently open, with the last date to apply online set as 27th April 2026. Candidates are advised to review eligibility criteria and programme details before applying through the official portal.
Admission to the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes and M.A. courses will be conducted via the Common Offer Acceptance Portal, with the first round of offers expected in the second week of May 2026.
Selected candidates will report for admission in July 2026, and classes are scheduled to commence on 27th July 2026.
Highlighting the unique aspects of the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes, Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras, said, “IIT Madras offers 34 different M tech programs encompassing both core and interdisciplinary areas in engineering and technology with internship opportunities. We also offer MA in four different programs.
A total of 735 seats in MTech and 100 seats in MA are available. We invite GATE qualified candidates from across the country to apply for these programs and grow with our innovative ecosystem.”

IIT Madras M Tech Programmes: Structured Around Flexible Credit-Based System, Integrating Core Courses, Electives, and Project Work
This approach enables students to customise their academic pathways while gaining exposure to industry-linked projects, sponsored research, and international collaborations in select cases.
Eligibility for the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes includes candidates qualified in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (2024, 2025, or 2026), IIT graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 and above, sponsored professionals, and candidates under categories such as QIP and defence sponsorship. Admissions for M.Sc. programmes will be conducted through the Joint Admission Test for Masters, while M.A. admissions will also consider GATE-qualified applicants.
The institute maintains a strong placement track record for the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes, with a majority of students securing positions in reputed organisations. The strong industry connections, active research ecosystem, and opportunities in industrial consultancy and sponsored research significantly enhance student employability.
Students enrolled in the IIT Madras M Tech Programmes are encouraged to undertake real-world project work in collaboration with industry and approved organisations, strengthening practical exposure and career readiness.
Financial support is available for eligible Indian students through Half-Time Teaching Assistantships (HTTA), offering ₹12,400 per month. Additionally, prestigious fellowships such as the Department of Atomic Energy Graduate Fellowship (DAE-GF) provide a monthly stipend of ₹35,000 along with assured placement in DAE units upon successful completion.
Further support is extended through sponsorships by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, which funds up to 10 students in the M.Tech. Ocean Technology programme, enabling them to work in critical areas related to ocean sciences and technology.
