Bengaluru: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the Ministry of Education of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch IISc Ethiopia Joint PhD Programs, aimed at strengthening cooperation in higher education, research, and academic capacity building.

The partnership focuses on enhancing academic excellence and research innovation through multidisciplinary joint Ph.D. programs across science, engineering, technology, and related disciplines.

Under the IISc Ethiopia Joint PhD programs agreement, both institutions will collaborate on faculty and student exchanges, joint research projects, curriculum development, postgraduate training, and knowledge sharing in emerging and strategic fields.

The IISc Ethiopia Joint PhD programs initiative is expected to create institutional linkages between 47 Ethiopian universities and IISc Bangalore while promoting collaborative research and innovation.

Speaking at the MoU exchange ceremony, Prof Dr. Krishnaraj Ramaswamy, Multidisciplinary Joint Ph.D Programs Coordinator, Ministry of Education, Ethiopia, said the collaboration aligns with Ethiopia’s national higher education reform agenda and its commitment to building a knowledge-based economy.

“This partnership with IISc, one of the world’s leading research institutions, will significantly contribute to strengthening Ethiopia’s human capital and research capacity,” Prof Krishnaraj Ramaswamy said.

Representing IISc Bangalore, Prof Ramray Bhat, Chair, Office of International Relations, IISc Bangalore, highlighted the institute’s commitment to global academic partnerships.

“We are pleased to collaborate with the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia to promote high-quality research, innovation, and advanced training. This MoU reflects our shared vision of addressing global and regional challenges through science and technology,” he noted.

The MoU marks a significant step toward strengthening educational and scientific cooperation between India and Ethiopia, with a focus on sustainable development, technological advancement, and long-term academic collaboration.
