Pune: Manipal Hospital Baner doctors successfully treated a 3-day-old baby diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening congenital condition – intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus – through swift diagnosis and emergency surgical intervention.
The newborn, delivered at Manipal Hospital Baner, was stable immediately after birth. However, on the second day, the infant developed feeding difficulties and persistent vomiting after every feed.
Recognising these early warning signs, the paediatric team initiated immediate investigations to rule out serious underlying conditions.
Manipal Hospital Baner Saves Newborn With Rapid Diagnosis and Surgical Precision
According to Dr Paritosha Dalal, Consultant – Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeon at Manipal Hospital Baner, intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus is a surgical emergency that can rapidly turn fatal if not addressed in time.
Advanced imaging, including urgent abdominal sonography, confirmed an obstruction at the beginning of the small intestine caused by the twisting of improperly positioned intestines around the superior mesenteric artery, significantly threatening blood supply to the bowel.

The newborn was taken into emergency surgery without delay. The surgical team meticulously untwisted the bowel, restoring blood flow and preventing intestinal gangrene.
Dr Dalal highlighted that immediate restoration of blood circulation is critical in such cases to preserve intestinal viability and prevent permanent damage.
Manipal Hospital Baner Saves Newborn Through Comprehensive Neonatal Care
The infant later developed complications associated with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious condition that can cause bowel perforation in newborns.
A subsequent emergency surgical procedure was performed to remove the damaged section of the intestine. The baby was closely monitored in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and received continuous neonatal and surgical care.
After nearly three weeks of intensive treatment, the newborn showed consistent recovery and was discharged in stable condition.
The baby continues to be monitored for healthy feeding patterns and weight gain and has demonstrated steady improvement in growth.
