AVISEM-25: Indian Air Force Pushes for Self-Reliance in Avionics at Pune Seminar

AVISEM-25

Pune: The Indian Air Force (IAF) Headquarters Maintenance Command (HQ MC) successfully concluded AVISEM-25, a two-day seminar on “Challenges in Avionics Development and Product Life Cycle Management”, held on 12–13 August 2025 at the Base Repair Depot (BRD), Pune.

The AVISEM-25 seminar was chaired by Air Marshal Vijay Kumar Garg, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, HQ MC, and attended by senior representatives from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and over 100 industry partners.

Focus on Self-Reliance in Avionics

In his keynote address, Air Marshal Garg emphasized the IAF’s strategic goal of achieving self-reliance in avionics through indigenization, reverse engineering, and structured life cycle management of Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).

He reiterated the service’s focus on strengthening in-house repair capabilities and domestic development to reduce dependency on foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and enhance India’s aerospace capabilities.

AVISEM-25: Addressing Technical Challenges

Air Marshal Garg acknowledged the technical complexity of maintaining avionics systems without original design data. He urged the development of indigenous diagnostic and testing tools and encouraged deeper collaboration with DRDO, CEMILAC, NAL, and the private sector to create future-ready avionics systems.

Industry and R&D Collaboration

The IAF assured industry partners of full depot-level support for indigenous development projects. CSIR–NAL was onboarded as a technical consultant to provide expertise in design and certification.

A hands-on workshop conducted by CSIR-NAL, combined with the presentation of a certification toolkit by CEMILAC, offered structured processes for design and development (D&D) agencies. These initiatives are expected to significantly streamline certification pathways and accelerate indigenous avionics production.

AVISEM-25: Boosting India’s Aerospace Self-Reliance

The successful conclusion of AVISEM-25 marked another milestone in the IAF’s ongoing commitment to aerospace self-reliance, fostering stronger collaboration between the armed forces, research bodies, and industry. By combining depot-level infrastructure with advanced R&D expertise, the IAF is creating an enabling environment for next-generation avionics innovation in India.
