New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth ₹858 crore for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems and the inspection of P8I aircraft, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s defence capabilities.
The agreements for Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems and aircraft maintenance were formalised at Kartavya Bhawan-2, New Delhi, on March 27, 2026.
Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems Procurement
Under the agreement, the Ministry of Defence signed a ₹445 crore contract with JSC Rosoboronexport for the procurement of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems for the Indian Army.
The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems are expected to significantly enhance India’s multi-layered air defence capabilities. These advanced systems are designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles.
The acquisition of Tunguska Air Defence Missile Systems also reinforces the longstanding strategic defence partnership between India and Russia.
Inspection of P8I Aircraft
In a parallel development, the Ministry of Defence also signed a ₹413 crore contract with Boeing India Defense Private Ltd for the Inspection (Depot Level) of P8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft for the Indian Navy.
The contract, executed under the Buy Indian category with 100% indigenous content, will facilitate depot-level maintenance of the P8I fleet at an in-country Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
The maintenance contract is expected to ensure operational readiness and longevity of the Indian Navy’s P8I aircraft fleet, further strengthening maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
