Mumbai: A 25-year-old man who had recently begun dialysis due to advanced kidney failure received a life-saving kidney transplant from his 48-year-old mother at Wockhardt Hospitals.

The intervention led by Dr Nikhil Bhasin has given the patient a renewed opportunity to return to a normal and active life following a rapid yet comprehensive transplant evaluation.

The patient had been diagnosed with advanced kidney disease and was started on dialysis just two months prior, after his kidneys lost their ability to function effectively.

Medical investigations indicated that the likely underlying cause was a form of glomerular disease, which affects the kidney’s filtering units, known as glomeruli. Despite undergoing steroid therapy, his condition continued to worsen, eventually necessitating dialysis.

“Developing kidney failure at such a young age can be extremely challenging, both physically and emotionally,” said Dr Nikhil Bhasin at Wockhardt Hospitals.

“For younger patients, transplantation offers a far better quality of life compared with long-term dialysis, allowing them to resume education, work, and normal daily activities.”

Considering the patient’s age and strong willingness to undergo transplantation, the medical team led by Dr Nikhil Bhasin recommended early evaluation for a kidney transplant instead of prolonged dialysis.

The patient’s mother volunteered as a donor and underwent extensive compatibility assessments, including blood tests and transplant fitness evaluations, ensuring safety for both donor and recipient.

The entire transplant process — including donor evaluation, medical clearances, and regulatory approvals — was completed within a month.

“The advantage of a living donor kidney transplant is that it allows us to plan the surgery in a timely manner, which significantly improves outcomes,” explained Dr Nikhil Bhasin.

“When transplantation is performed early, patients can avoid prolonged dependence on dialysis and return to a healthier, more independent life.”

The transplant surgery was successfully conducted, and the donated kidney began functioning effectively soon after the procedure. Both the donor and recipient showed steady recovery and are currently in good health.

Medical experts highlight that kidney transplantation remains the most effective long-term treatment for end-stage kidney disease, especially among younger patients.

According to Dr Nikhil Bhasin, early diagnosis, timely referral to transplant specialists, and the availability of a compatible living donor can significantly enhance outcomes and overall quality of life.
