Pune: Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Kharadi, have successfully removed a massive uterine fibroid weighing approximately 1.8 kg through an advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure.
The complex total laparoscopic hysterectomy was performed on a 45-year-old woman from Mumbai who had been experiencing severe abdominal pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and difficulty in urination due to the large fibroid.
The patient, a mother of two with a history of two caesarean deliveries, was diagnosed with uterine fibroid nearly two years ago. Over the past six months, her symptoms progressively worsened, significantly affecting her daily activities and overall quality of life.
Due to concerns about open surgery and prolonged recovery, she initially deferred surgical treatment. However, the increasing severity of her condition eventually necessitated medical intervention.

Advanced Management of Uterine Fibroid Through Minimally Invasive Surgery
Commenting on the case, Dr Kapil Kanade, HOD & Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Manipal Hospital Kharadi, stated that detailed investigations revealed multiple uterine fibroids, including subserosal, intramural, and submucosal types.
These had enlarged the uterus to the size comparable to a 28–30-week pregnancy. The largest fibroid measured approximately 18 × 17 cm, with the combined uterine and fibroid weight reaching around 1.8 kg.
Dr. Kanade explained that the case was considered high-risk due to the massive uterine size, prior caesarean sections resulting in dense internal adhesions, and the increased risk of excessive bleeding and bladder injury.
Despite these challenges, the surgical team successfully performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy using advanced minimally invasive techniques.
The uterus and fibroids were removed through three small incisions measuring between 5 and 8 mm. The procedure resulted in minimal blood loss of approximately 200 ml, enabling faster recovery and reduced post-operative discomfort for the patient.

Parameswar Das, Hospital Director, Manipal Hospital, highlighted that the successful management of such a complex uterine fibroid case reflects the hospital’s strong clinical expertise and advanced infrastructure.
He stated that the hospital remains focused on patient-centric care by offering cutting-edge surgical solutions that prioritise safety, quicker recovery, and improved clinical outcomes.
Following the procedure, the patient was discharged within 24 hours and returned to Mumbai after a follow-up consultation. Doctors emphasised that symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, persistent abdominal pain, and changes in bowel or bladder habits should not be ignored.
Timely medical consultation and early diagnosis of uterine fibroid can significantly reduce surgical risks and help maintain quality of life.
