SoftBank Subsidiary Graphcore to Open Bengaluru AI Engineering Campus, Create 500 Jobs

Bengaluru/Bristol: Graphcore, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, has announced a major investment of up to £1 billion in India over the next decade.

The initiative includes the establishment of a new AI Engineering Campus in Bengaluru, aimed at creating 500 new semiconductor jobs.

The upcoming AI Engineering Campus in Bengaluru will serve as a key center for the company’s innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) computing, supporting SoftBank Group’s long-term vision to become a global leader in Artificial Super Intelligence platform development.

Graphcore Expands AI Engineering Operations in India

In the initial phase, the company will begin recruiting 100 AI semiconductor engineers in India. The roles will include specialists in silicon logical design, physical design, verification, characterization, and bring-up.

This strategic expansion is backed by SoftBank Group’s ongoing investment in Graphcore, projected to reach £1 billion annually in the coming years. The company also plans to double its UK workforce to approximately 750 employees, primarily in high-skill engineering and AI roles.

SoftBank’s AI Vision and Graphcore’s Role

Since SoftBank acquired Graphcore in 2024, the company has been an integral part of several large-scale AI infrastructure initiatives. Among these is the $500 billion Stargate project, a global AI compute infrastructure initiative launched in partnership with OpenAI and Oracle.

The Graphcore team in Bengaluru will design next-generation semiconductor products for use by leading AI researchers and enterprises worldwide. Their innovations will contribute to advancements in critical areas such as drug discovery, public health, environmental sustainability, and enterprise productivity.

Bengaluru: The Natural Choice for Graphcore’s AI Campus

Nigel Toon, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman, stated in a press release that Graphcore selected Bengaluru for its AI Engineering Campus due to the city’s strong position as India’s premier technology hub. Known as the country’s “Silicon Valley,” Bengaluru offers a thriving ecosystem of leading universities, technology startups, and global enterprises.

Both the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have prioritized the semiconductor industry through national initiatives that strengthen specialized skill development and infrastructure.
