Thane: KIMS Hospitals Thane has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a high-risk right total hip replacement on a woman in her 60s suffering from multiple comorbidities.

The patient was battling advanced osteoporosis, Sjogren’s syndrome, distal renal tubular acidosis (RTA), hypokalemia, and chronic anemia, making the case extremely complex.

The patient initially presented with persistent pain and weakness in her right hip despite receiving treatment elsewhere for Sjögren’s syndrome and pneumonia.

After months of immobility and discomfort, an MRI at KIMS Hospitals Thane revealed a full-thickness impacted undisplaced fracture of the femoral neck, which had gone undiagnosed for weeks.

The presence of severe osteoporosis, electrolyte imbalances, and autoimmune complications further heightened the surgical risks.

A multidisciplinary team of experts in orthopaedics, rheumatology, endocrinology, nephrology, pulmonology, and cardiology carried out extensive preoperative evaluations to stabilize the patient before surgery.

The patient was initially admitted to the ICU and later shifted to the ward after achieving hemodynamic stability, infection control, and favorable physiotherapy progress.

“Despite the delayed diagnosis and multiple systemic complications, the patient has responded well to the planned surgical and medical care. She has regained mobility and is now fit for discharge,” said Dr. Parth Agrawal.

Consultant Rheumatologist Dr Natasha Negalur More highlighted that patients with Sjögren’s syndrome and distal RTA face fluctuating potassium levels and higher risks of musculoskeletal complications, underscoring the importance of coordinated medical intervention.

Adding further, Dr Vijay Negalur, HOD – Diabetology, KIMS Hospitals Thane, noted, “Comorbidities such as anemia, electrolyte imbalance, and autoimmune disorders require personalized care plans. The successful outcome was possible due to seamless coordination between multiple specialties.”
