Ayurveda Day to Be Celebrated on 23 September Annually from 2025

New Delhi: The Government of India has officially designated 23 September as the fixed date for Ayurveda Day, starting from 2025.

This significant shift was announced through a Gazette Notification issued in March 2025, moving the celebration away from its earlier observance on Dhanvantari Jayanti. The decision provides Ayurveda with a universal calendar identity, ensuring wider global participation and recognition.

Ayurveda Day 2025 Theme: Ayurveda for People & Planet

The theme for Ayurveda Day 2025 is “Ayurveda for People & Planet.” Announcing the theme, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, said: “Ayurveda is not merely a healthcare system, it is a life science rooted in harmony between the individual and the environment. By fixing 23 September as Ayurveda Day, India has given Ayurveda a global calendar identity. The theme ‘Ayurveda for People & Planet’ represents our resolve to harness Ayurveda’s potential for holistic wellbeing and planetary health.”

Ayurveda Day’s Evolution into a Global Movement

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, highlighted that since its inception in 2016, Ayurveda Day has transformed into a worldwide movement celebrating India’s traditional wisdom. He noted that findings from the first all-India NSSO survey reaffirm Ayurveda as the most widely used system of treatment across rural and urban areas. “The 2025 theme underlines our commitment towards advancing holistic health and ecological balance,” he said.

Historic Milestones in Ayurveda Day Celebrations

The 9th Ayurveda Day (2024) was a milestone moment when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi. The event also saw the launch of four Centres of Excellence in Ayurveda and the nationwide ‘Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan’ campaign, alongside other initiatives worth ₹12,850 crore.

Expanding Global Reach

Building on this momentum, Ayurveda Day 2025 is envisioned as a platform to position Ayurveda as a solution to global health challenges such as lifestyle disorders, stress management, and climate-linked diseases. Activities will include wellness consultations, awareness campaigns, youth engagement programmes, and international collaborations.

In 2024, Ayurveda Day witnessed activities in about 150 countries, reaffirming its growing global footprint. The Ministry of Ayush and its associated institutions will lead the 2025 celebrations with a strong focus on both health and sustainability.
